Unpacking is the process of taking a broad task or standard and analyzing its components, then breaking the task or standard into smaller, more explicit instructional learning targets for use in daily teaching and classroom-level assessment.
Steps in the Unpacking Process:
- Identify the skill required of the learner (verbs).
- Identify the knowledge in the standard (nouns)
Identify the specificity in the standards.
Example
7th Grade PE:
SE 3A- participate in games, sports, dance, and/or outdoor pursuits in and outside of school based on individual interests and/or capabilities;
- Skills--participate
- Knowledge--games, sports, dance, outdoor pursuits
- Specificity - in/outside of school; individual interest, capabilities
9:15-9:45am - Instructional Implications (Asynchronous Learning)
Plan for the week with the end in mind. The first step will be to write an exemplar you want students to produce to show their thinking and understanding of the concept that was taught during the week.
Your task:
- Read the action steps and the guiding questions for Instructional Implications on the EISD Planning Protocol.
- Create an exemplar for the performance task.
- Post an image of your unpacked TEK/SE for EACH DAY of week 1 in the TEAMS channel chat.
Reminder: Due at 9:45 - Post an image of your unpacked TEK/SE for each day of week 1 in the main TEAMS channel chat
10:15-10:30am - Break
10:30-12pm - Planning Daily Instruction (Synchronous Learning)

- Some items might not be pertinent based on your content (i.e. STAAR, URG)
