Tools and Weapons
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have lived in Australia for at least 50,000 - 60,000 years. They were Australia's first inventors! They invented a variety of tools and weapons to make tasks easier to fulfil their need for survival.
Boomerangs
Boomerangs are probably the first heaver-than-air flying machine ever invented. The oldest Australian Aboriginal boomerangs are over ten thousand years old.
Digging Sticks
Digging sticks are made by women and kids to dig for yams and other root vegetables.
Woomera (Spear Thrower)
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people designed the woomera to be used with the spear so that it could travel at a quicker speed and longer distances.
Spears
Spears were very useful tools. There were many different types used for different purposes such as hunting and fishing.
Stone Axe
The stone axe was used the Aboriginal people for cutting and chopping. Axes were made from river stones which were ground and flaked to make a cutting edge, and then tied to a wooden handle.
