Thomas Community Newsletter
November 15, 2022
Tonight at 6 PM TMS is hosting a virtual parent presentation on RULER, our social-emotional learning program. All are welcome to log in and then join us after for the November PTA meeting which will start at 7 PM. The PTA meeting will be held in a hybrid format so you can log in or attend in person in the TMS LMC. See below for login information for both meetings. This information is also listed under each event on the TMS website calendar.
This week TMS is hosting the Book Fair in the LMC and Student Council is continuing with a Food Drive. Many thanks to the TMS student leaders for assisting in our Veterans Day celebration. It was an inspiring day as we learned about the service of our special guests that joined us for our first all-school assembly of the school year. Please click here to view this video that highlights these amazing Veterans and ask your child about this heartwarming event.
TMS students continue to excel in and out of our classrooms and to provide service to our school community. We are grateful to the many talented student musicians who performed at last week's Concert and Symphonic Band Event ~ thank you Ms. Pucci and Mr. Berry! We also wish to congratulate the Band members below for making it into the ILMEA HONOR Band! This required a lot of hard work on the audition material in order to be accepted. The ILMEA festival took place last Saturday, Nov 4, and the ILMEA Jazz festival will take place on Nov 19. Congratulations on representing Thomas so well at this amazing band festival!

This past Friday, both TMS & SMS teamed up with the Arlington Heights Police Department to host the "BRAVE" Challenge with the girl's basketball teams. Games were played against Barrington School District while raising money to support Special Olympics. We thank Mrs. Hepner for coordinating this event and the TMS student leaders who assisted with the raffles and sold treats at this event.
We also wish to recognize and give thanks to Mrs. Michelle Klein for the Peer Tutoring Program she coordinates at TMS. This year there are 27 tutoring partners and over 54 students involved in helping one another during homeroom. This program exemplifies what it means to BE THE GOOD!

Please join us for a Ruler Parent Presentation on 11/14/22 @ 6 PM at TMS
We are excited to be sharing the RULER approach to social and emotional learning with our students! Our staff knows and practices the skills of emotional intelligence and is prepared to teach and model these emotional intelligence skills.
During our Monday Advisory Ruler lessons, teachers will be leading instruction to support the development and refining of the RULER skills. In middle school, students learn about emotions and emotional intelligence within the context of their real-world experiences: personally, at school, in our communities, and in our understanding of the world around us. Each lesson addresses a developmentally appropriate topic such as healthy and unhealthy relationships, conflict resolution, coping skills, and identifying personal values.
Over the course of the year, we will be providing ongoing communication to you about RULER in these Community Newsletters. Please click here for additional Ruler information located on the D25 website.
We hope you'll join us tonight for the Ruler Parent Presentation at 6 PM and the PTA Meeting at 7 PM.

- ABSENCE REPORTING: The TMS attendance reporting options are open 24 hours a day 7 days per week. If your child is sick or unable to attend school, the parent/guardian MUST report this to the TMS office by filling out the Online Attendance Form OR calling the office at 847-398-4260 by 8 AM, the latest, on the day of the absences. Please be sure to report your child's absence so that we can account for all students each day. Advanced notification of absences is greatly appreciated.
- ARRIVAL TIME: Students should arrive at school between 7:30-7:40 AM so that they can stop at their locker and be seated in their homeroom class by 7:50 AM.
- LATE ARRIVAL/TARDIES: Students arriving late to school are unexcused unless a parent or guardian calls to report the reason for the late arrival. Oversleeping and traffic are not considered excused absences. Students must sign in at the office upon arrival at school.
- EARLY DISMISSAL: If your child has a doctor's appointment and needs to leave school before dismissal at 2:45 PM, please be sure to report this to the TMS office by filling out the Online Attendance Form OR calling the office at 847-398-4260. Students must sign out in the office before leaving school early.
Students who are absent from class are encouraged to check Schoology for assignment information. In addition, it may be helpful for students who are absent to attend Homework Club / Office Hours for a few days upon returning to school.
