LCE News From Mrs. Blaney

September, 2019

"All at once, summer collapsed into fall." -Oscar Wilde

From Back to School Nights to September's Character Day, the month was full of introductions, celebrations, learning, and fun. This newsletter will highlight the events of September and announce upcoming October events.

Back To School Nights Sept. 4th and 5th

These evenings were for parents to come and learn from Mrs. Blaney and classroom teachers about what to expect for the 2019/20 school year. Thank you for joining us!

Patriotic Day Motorcade

The LCE family was honored to be part of the 9/11 Patriotic Day Motorcade this year, organized by the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce. Students and staff lined Encinas Drive and La Cañada Blvd. to view the motorcade.

Reminder: No Pets Allowed on Campus

I'm an animal lover! But we have a number of students who are allergic to pets or have a fear of pets. We know of their allergies and fears and will protect them here at LCE. Please help us. Do not bring your beloved pets on campus to wait with you in the drop off or pick up areas. The only pets we allow have been cleared as therapy pets, and parent permission has been previously granted for those visits. Thank you for understanding. Pets can wait down the street with you or stay in the car with you (without invitation of students coming to the car windows to say hello). Thank you for helping to keep our students safe.

Mrs. Bahrami, LCE's Former Library Specialist

In September, Mrs. Daniger's talented daughter created this beautiful image of Mrs. Bahrami, our dear friend who passed away in March. This is displayed in our newly refurbished library.

New Library and New Librarian

Our new library specialist, Billie Mellilo, has done an amazing job with our library program. The following photo shows her recent display to highlight Banned Books Week. Follow Billie on Instagram @wonderful_world_of_lcelibrary.

Campus Life

Spirit Rally to End the Month

LCE Student Council, led by Mrs. Redecker and Mrs. Drange, hosted a lovely rally on September 27. Summer Reading Winners were announced as were Kiwanis 6th Grade Terrific Kids. Paws for Praise awards were distributed to students from each class, and Student Council members taught us all about KINDNESS and good CHARACTER.

Bullying vs. Conflict

Please read this helpful graphic to understand the difference between normal playground conflicts and bullying. I'll provide more as the year goes on. As educators, we know the difference based on our years of experience, and we help students understand bullying vs. normal peer conflict. We take bullying seriously!

Let It Grow: Parent Project

Will you consider embarking on this journey? I've run this project by our staff, especially our staff who are also parents. Most agree that Let It Grow is a worthwhile project to consider. I'll continue sharing information about it in future newsletters, but for now, please watch this brief video.

Real Life Example

You may know that I am the 9th of 10 children!. My mother got us all to do our part. Each of us had a role to play when it came to cleaning up the dishes. We were numbered! The chart is below and is now framed in my dad's apartment. :)

What were YOU able to do as a child that you may or may not be allowing your own child to be doing today?

Age appropriate chores for children when it comes to clean up for dishes include:

4-5 years old: setting/clearing the table with supervision

6-7 years old: putting dishes away from the dishwasher/dish rack

8-11: wash dishes and prepare simple meals

Typing Club

From Our Tech Department:

"Now, more than ever, typing skills are vital for people of all ages, and we want to make sure our students are building these foundational skills. The district has purchased a subscription to Typingclub.com for all 2nd-8th grade students. They can work on lessons at home and school by logging in with their Google accounts. We encourage you to take a look at these activities as your child is working on them--lessons are fun, engaging, and age-appropriate."

Book Choice

This month, I'd like to recommend the book The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives. If kids own their own successes and failures (without the help of mom or dad) they will build resilience and grit. If you happen to buy this book on Amazon Smile, don't forget to make La Cañada Elementary your charitable organization!
