About Holoprosencephaly
Holoprosencephaly is a birth defect of the brain, it also can cause facial defects including closely spaced eyes, small head size, and sometimes clefts of the lip and roof of the mouth, as well as other birth defects.
How do you get this disorter?
Holoprosencephaly is caused by the failure of the procephalon (the embryonic forebrain) to sufficiently divide into the double lobes of the cerebral hemispheres.
What can a doctor do to help with this disorter?
There isn’t really much a doctor can do. but to be prepared for this you can get a test by getting a brain scan or MRI.
How is this disorder treated (how are the people who have this disorder helped to feel better)?
All you can do about it is get treatment supportive and symptomatic. And it is helpful to go to support groups and HPE conferences. So if you know or see someone with HPE try to be supportive.
Facts about this disease
Chances of getting it are 1 in 250 during early embryo development, and 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 20,000 at term.
