Leverty Letter
The art of teaching, or pedagogy, is important, because you cannot replace the excitement and thoughtful unveiling of content with a worksheet. Recently I spent time in the classrooms chatting with students about what they were reading, enjoying having them read their writings, and exploring the world of “learning through their eyes”. One thing that was ever present, no matter which classroom I entered, was the art of teaching coming to life. Teachers were engaged with students, using intonation and inflection in their voice to excite and enthuse. Teachers asked important questions, and knew exactly when to pause and ask a higher level question relevant to prior knowledge. Teachers paced their lessons so that students gained the right amount of knowledge or content at the exact moment they needed it, in order to forge forward – knowing just when a child is in need of the next step is a key differentiated strategy teachers employ. I’m very proud of the work that our students are doing in their daily academic practice, and it would not be possible without the dedicated and talented teachers facilitating the learning. Wouldn’t it be nice to share with teachers the exact teaching trait that your child most enjoys about their teacher? Let’s all celebrate the good things taking shape at Montclair!
Lead with kindness,
Sean Leverty

Tech Corner ~ December
Montclair is participating in Hour of Code! Your student will be learning what an ALGORITHM is, learning how to think ahead and give instructions that include some basic block coding skills. If you would like to continue Hour of Code at home, there are many, many great programs that are aimed at a variety of skill levels, from beginning non-readers, to older students writing lines of code.
