College & Career Counselor Classroom Visits

The college and career counselor started visiting 10th grade English classes to talk to students about important information this week. This newsletter contains what was shared with your student.

For students who are not currently in an English class, will post a recording of what we are telling the students to the College & Career Center Canvas in the next few days so that all 10th grade students can access the information.

ASVAB Testing

Thursday, Oct. 22nd, 9am

7618 Evans Road

San Antonio, TX

This will be the first round of ASVAB testing for the year.

ASVAB Testing

The ASVAB is a timed multi-aptitude test, which is given at over 14,000 schools and Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS) nationwide and is developed and maintained by the Department of Defense. However, the ASVAB is not just a test for the military. It is also a career interest inventory.

How Important is the ASVAB Test?
The scores are in four critical areas -- Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Mathematics Knowledge (see below) -- count towards the Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT) score. The AFQT score determines whether a person is qualified to enlist in the U.S. military.

Scores in the other areas of the ASVAB will determine how qualified a person is for certain military occupational specialties and Enlistment Bonuses. A high score will improve chances of getting the specialty/job and signing bonus.

Scoring high on the ASVAB will require study and concentration.

ASVAB Testing Dates for 2020-2021:

October 22

November 19

January 21

February 25

April 22

Virtual Service Academy Day

Friday, Oct. 9th, 4pm

This is an online event.

Each year Congressman Cuellar has the privilege to nominate students to the U.S. Military Service Academies as part of the admissions process. Normally, our office hosts a Service Academy Day where representatives from the Academies would visit schools to talk to students who are interested and provide them more information on the admissions process.

However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic we understand that many schools are still doing remote learning and have students taking classes online. To help students obtain all the necessary information for the nomination and admissions processes for the Military Academies, our office will be hosting a Virtual Service Academy Day where Congressman Cuellar and representatives from the Academies will be presenting this information.

A link to register will be coming soon...Stay tuned.

RSVPs are enabled for this event.
