Weekly Family Update #21
January 15, 2023
Principal's Message
Hello Falcon Families,
This is a reminder that there is no school on Monday as we celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Did you know that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service? The purpose of this day is to encourage all Americans to volunteer to help improve our communities. It is a "day on" not a "day off."
While I encourage families and students to get some much needed rest this weekend, I also encourage all Falcons to use this National Day of Service to better our neighborhood. Decorate your sidewalk with some positive messages of love in chalk, help your neighbor by mowing their lawn, or send some snacks down to the fire station. For more information about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the National Day of Service in his honor, or if you are looking for some ideas for how you can give back, please check the link HERE. Use the hashtag #ovmsfalcondayon on social media so we can all see your good work Falcons!
This week is our Falcon Foundation fundraiser at Board and Brew in Del Sur on Wednesday January 18 from 3pm-8pm. Show the flyer below and we will receive 20%% of sales. I will see you there for a Turkado with cheddar!

New Information
Traffic Safety Help Needed
Falcon Families,
We have seen a big increase in unsafe practices along the pick-up/drop-off curb on Carmel Valley Road especially double parking along this busy street. It is extremely dangerous for students to hop between cars to find their ride home. We are imploring you to please obey the traffic laws and do not double park along this road.
Student safety is of the upmost importance. We encourage families to drop-off/pick-up students in our main parking lot. It is much quicker than you think and is the safest place for students to be exiting and entering vehicles.
Please help us ensure our students arrive and depart from school safety.
Thank you!

No Outside Food
It’s Not Just About Free or Reduced-Price Meals
Please Help Increase Our School Funding by Filling Out This Application!
Although school meals are now free to all students, the application for free and reduced-price meals is still very important. School funding depends in part on the number of students at our school that qualify for free or reduced-price meals. With all students now eating for free, fewer families are completing the application and our school is at risk of losing much-needed educational funds. Plus, students that qualify for free or reduced-price meals may also be missing out on discounts on bus transportation, home internet, SAT and AP tests, and college application fees!
Even if you did not qualify before but your income has changed, you may qualify. For example, children from a family of four are eligible if the total gross (pre-tax) household income is less than $4,279 per month, or less than $51,338 per year. Household income information is confidential and applying online is quick and easy.
Apply online at MySchoolApps.com, or pick up a paper application in the school office.
Bicycle, eBike, Scooter, Riding
Students may ride a bicycle, eBike, scooter, or skateboard to school. Children must wear a helmet, provide a lock for the bike, and follow safety rules/laws. A permission form, obtained from the office and also found HERE, must be completed and on file with the office for students who wish to ride their bikes to school. Bikes and other vehicles must be walked once on school grounds. No rollerblades, scooters of any kind or skateboards are allowed on campus. All modes of transport must be secured in the bike enclosure during the school day.

Updates from the Attendance Office
Requesting Early Release For Your Students
We are currently short-staffed in the office and during lunch supervision. Calling ahead will allow us to notify your student before they go to lunch. With over 750 students at lunch at one time, finding students can be challenging and time-consuming while you wait.
Please remember to call the Attendance Hotline for early release, absence & late arrivals: 858-676-6963.
