Spotlight on SAMR: QR Code Gallery Walk by Jillian Ferris
How can you combine the active movement of a gallery walk without students carrying their computers around the classroom? Try a QR Code Gallery Walk!
By: Jillian Ferris, 8th grade social studies teacher at MMS
Instructional Angle: I wanted students to examine primary sources closely, but give them the freedom of choice, movement, and their computers. Using The QR Code Generator, I turned the link for each source into a unique QR code. I pasted the codes into a Google Slideshow (1 code per slide), added the source title, and used symbols to identify three different types of sources. After printing (I doubled the set so there were 20 options), I hung the pages like a game board and students came to the board and would grab various ones to scan at their desks.
Technical Angle: We found that students could either download The QR Code Generator app or use the website to read the QR codes. (The app uses the computer web cam to scan the code and directs to the image's URL.) Very few students had used QR codes before, but they were really intrigued and mastered it very quickly. This engaging format is something you could apply to all content areas and grade levels.
