Great things going on in our schools
Have a great summer
On behalf of the Board of Education, and our entire faculty, I would like to thank you for another successful year of school. Each year, as the school year ends, we close our schools and immediately begin preparing for September. I am already looking forward to beginning to work on our strategic plan which is aimed at improving our school district in several ways.
Our goals are:
Goal #1: We will personalize our curriculum, instruction and assessment to meet the needs of our diverse population.
Goal #2: We will be accountable for operating a safe, efficient, and effective school district.
Goal #3: We will develop and strengthen our relationships with community stakeholders through effective communication and collaboration.
Goal #4: We will foster a culture of high expectations by delivering a rigorous and outstanding 21st century education to our students.
This summer our school principals will complete their school goals for 2017-2018 and those goals will be shared at our Board of Education meeting in July.
Also, below is a copy of the 2017-2018 school calendar, which was approved by the Board of Education in February. I hope that you enjoy the summer months ahead.
If you have any questions over the summer, please contact our school offices.
Best to you this summer,
Dr. Tom Tramaglini
Superintendent of Schools
Second Grader Community Worker Visits -
As a cross curricula learning experience the Second Grade students have had the opportunity to meet with two community workers. Second Grade students spend time in Social Studies as well as in their Language Arts program learning about community workers, their jobs and the impact they have on our communities. In Language Arts, students read stories that highlighted some of these community workers.
This Friday, June 16th, Mayor DeLuca visited students in the second grade. Students learned about the roll a mayor plays in the community. After doing so, they practiced their writing skills and wrote letters to the Mayor. They expressed their likes and concerns about Kenilworth. The students asked many questions about his position.Mayor DeLuca was delighted to receive the letters from these young citizens and has taken time out of his busy schedule to come and speak to all of the Second Grade classes. The students are excited for his visit and to learn more about the work he does in town. They will be prepared with even more questions for him.
In May, the students learned about firefighters as part of their Social Studies and Reading curriculum. Children discussed a firefighter's responsibilities as well as the various equipment used in firefighting. Mr. Schmidtberg, a firefighter from Union, came to school to share his personal experiences as a firefighter. He highlighted his job duties and the many ways fire fighters assist the community. Students were able to see his uniform and tools up close as well as ask questions.
LITTLE FREE LIBRARY INSPIRES OUR READERS AT DAVID BREARLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL
On June 13th, middle school students gathered in the Brearley Courtyard Reading Garden for the official opening of our Little Free Library. Many students were able to chose books that they will use for their summer reading. Ms. Warchol would like to thank Mrs. Marsili, Mr. Lepore, and Drew Vanderzee for making this initiative possible. This project was funded by the Kenilworth Education Association Pride Committee.
Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that inspires a love of reading, builds community, and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world.
Through Little Free Libraries, millions of books are exchanged each year, profoundly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds.
A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange. They come in many shapes and sizes, but the most common version is a small wooden box of books. Anyone may take a book or bring a book to share.
Little Free Library book exchanges have a unique, personal touch. There is an understanding that real people are sharing their favorite books with their community; Little Libraries have been called “mini-town squares.”
