Pikesville High Newsletter | February 2019
From Principal Reid's Desk
Greetings Pikesville High Family,
Welcome to the official mid-point of the academic year!!! We are fully immersed in teaching our varied curricula with the utmost skill and refining our PARCC, SAT, and AP preparatory work. Our continued goal is to see more of our students achieving at higher levels of success in their coursework and on upcoming high-stakes exam. We are vigorously endeavoring that every teacher on every day during every lesson will be working towards the common goal and mission of student achievement!!!
We are soliciting your support in ensuring that your child is continuously staying on top of their schoolwork. You will make a tangible difference if you are encouraging deliberate time for reading/writing and other engaging, educational, and life-long activities at home. Thank you, in advance, for cultivating a conducive home-learning environment that promotes your child’s academic growth and development. We know that, with your assistance, we can be assured that every student will be properly prepared and in possession of the necessary skill sets that will position him/her for mastery of varied studies and significant assessments.
GRADE REPORTING
Your child’s second quarter report cards will be distributed on Thursday, February 7th. All of our many second marking period honor roll students will receive a congratulatory token for their academic scholarship and some will receive a ceremony designed to celebrate exemplary achievement. You are encouraged to keep abreast of your child’s performance by regularly viewing your BCPS One account. It is updated regularly, for your viewing and close monitoring. Please be reminded that all teachers offer coach classes for additional reinforcement and advancement, if desired and/or recommended. Do not hesitate to contact your child’s teachers, counselor, and/or administrator with any appreciations, concerns, or questions.
Third quarter interims will be distributed during homeroom on Thursday, March 7th, so please look out for them. PTSA Parent –Teacher Conferences will take place on Thursday, March 14th from 2:30 – 5:00 p.m. We look forward to seeing you then for this outstanding opportunity to hear from, and work with, our teachers to promote even more positive outcomes for the duration of the school year.
ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL O’CONNELL
Please join me in welcoming Associate Principal Kieran O’Connell, an aspiring leader who will be both training at and leading PHS for the month of February. We look forward to working with him and are confident that when he officially takes over leading the school from February 19th -March 1st, that he will do a PAWsome job.
PHS -Leading the Way:
Our Panthers Placed at Regional Business Conference held at Pikesville High for the first time in our school’s history. Our aspiring Panther Pikesville High School leaders and entrepreneurs participated in their second DECA Regional Conference and solidly placed in every event they entered. DECA is an international association for high school and college students interested in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. Currently, PHS has one of the largest DECA organization in BCPS.
So proud to announce that Megan Thomas, Special Education department chair, is PHS’ TEACHER OF THE YEAR!! Ms. Thomas will be recognized in a ceremony on April for her accomplishments and for receiving this distinction.
Congratulations to our Panthers who participated in PHS’ Got Talent to a warm and receptive audience. The showcase of abilities and gifts in our students was impressive indeed.
Kudos to Mr. Knipscher, STEM department chair, who applied and received over $8,000 of Innovative Learning funds to benefit our students and the Project Lead the Way program for our pre-engineers and science-minded students. We remain proud to be chosen as on of the 25 Top Engineering Source Schools for the University of Maryland.
Congratulations to Mr. Kotula, December’s Teacher of the Month.
We are so proud of Savoy Adams, a 12th grader, a finalist for the Champion of Courage Essay Contest. Only 20 students out of the 3,000 entries received this honor.
Much thanks are extended to Ms. Corasaniti, our World Language department chair, for establishing and advising the induction of our French and Spanish Honor Societies this year.
Thrilled that Ms. Molly Labriciossa, AVID Coordinator, received a stipend of 5,000.00 to provide college students scholarships to be AVID tutors this year.
Congrats to our Boys’ and Girls’ Indoor Track Teams for their solid performances this season.
NEW TO PHS
Attendance is a critical part of student performance and success. We are honoring our students AND, this semester, our teachers who show forth diligence and achieving PERFECT ATTENDANCE monthly.
Every week, teachers will be providing me with “PAWsitive Referrals” on students who have done something small, significant, noteworthy, and/or simply PAWsome. I will be recognizing those students via a Schoology email and Panther TV. We do not want to miss ANY opportunity to celebrate our future leaders.
Our seniors are experiencing a multitude of college acceptances, our sports teams are busy “PAWsitively” representing PHS, and our expanded extra-curricular offerings are making our students more connected contributors to our School of Excellence. We are proud of the work all of us, as crucial stakeholders, are doing to create a culture of consistently high-caliber teaching and learning.
Know that I appreciate your continued support; we could not do this very important work without you.
“Excitement in education and student productivity, the ability to get a result that you want from students, go together and cannot be separated.”
Special thanks are extended to our substitute Assistant Principal, Ms. Judy Edgar, who has served PHS so very effectively during her four-month tenure with us. We are appreciative of her quality time with us, will miss her, and wish her the very best in her future leadership endeavors.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO TAKE THE BCPS’ BRIEF STAKEHOLDER’S SURVEY, if you have not already, so that your opinions and feedback can be duly registered and acknowledged.
With Abundant Pride Honor and Success,
Yours in Education,
Sandra Reid
