The Triton Tribune Parent Edition

Be Kind ~ Be Awesome ~ Make The Right Choices

Volume 2 ~ Issue 9 ~ September 21, 2020

Wonderful Triton Students and Parents and Guardians,

"I stopped worrying about the start. The end is what is important." ~Usain Bolt~

"It's hard to beat a person who never gives up." ~Babe Ruth~

No one asked for distance learning but it is what we have been given. Seven month ago, we started on this journey with trepidation and reluctance and we struggled through the bumps along the way. We learned lessons that made our experience better each day. So, as we move into quarter 2, the need to evaluate our progress is a MUST so that we continue to move forward with greater success. The two quotes I have at the top speak to the lessons I learned in this journey: don't give up and how we start is not as important as how we finish. Tomorrow night, we will find out if we are continuing on this journey of distance learning or we are returning partially to school. Either way, we must choose to walk bravely into the decision and see it to completion. Either decision will present challenges but together, we resolve to find better ways to walk our journey together with greater success.

How are we doing so far in distance learning?

In the last three weeks students, parents and teachers completed surveys to determine how we are doing so far in distance learning. Five (5) different surveys were conducted to determine strengths and challenges that we have experienced as a school. Preliminary analysis of the surveys points to three major challenges: 1) meeting the socio-emotional needs of all stakeholders, especially students; 2) feeling overwhelmed and overloaded; and 3) having too many platforms and applications. The ELM leadership team is diving deeper into the results this week to determine how we can improve the overall experience and success of students. I have shared 20 slides that shows the compilation of all the results of the surveys given. Last Friday, I shared these results with teachers and we had a healthy, earnest and emotional discussion about the results. Please take a look at the results. Feel free to email me your thoughts. My leadership team and I will be looking for solutions to mitigate these challenges.

The Use of Asynchronous Time

During the Coffee With the Principal and the faculty meeting, it was discussed that with only 50% of students using the asynchronous or independent time after the live session, there needs to be an increase in how student access this particular support. In asking teachers, how they use this time, 90% stated that they stay on to be available if students need help. All students need to do is return to the live session to ask the question. What they have experienced is that most students do not return. Thirty percent (30%) of student stated they don't use these supports at all. At the faculty meeting, teachers discussed ways in which they can be more purposeful on how to get students to proactively utilize this embedded support. I am also asking parents to talk to their students about using this time because making this small adjustment could change the feeling of too much work.

Accessing Embedded Support System that are already in place

Distance learning at ELM has embedded systems of support. They are the: 1) use of asynchronous time; 2) use of office hours; 3) use of Friday interventions; and 4) use of Genius Bar. As we move into Quarter 2, please encourage your children to access these supports regular. We hope that if they do access them, they are able to complete work with little work to do after school hours.
