Autism Acceptance T-Shirts
Hi Salk Families,
It's that time of year again! We will once again be selling Autism Acceptance T-Shirts! This year's Autism acceptance t-shirt has been designed by Fraser High School senior and former Salk Seahawk, Olivia Wittstock, and it embraces the idea of inclusion - not just for people on the Autism Spectrum but for all those with different abilities. We are so proud to have a former Salk Seahawk student-created design that represents our district's commitment to inclusion!
The funds we raise from the sale of these shirts support our Peer-to-Peer programs throughout the district. In the past, these funds have been used for special celebrations and defraying the cost of Peer-to-Peer field trips, just to name a couple of things.
Please consider ordering a shirt (or 2!) for yourself and your family members. Order forms are attached and can also be found in In the Know, Over the Fence, and School Messenger. Orders due no later than Friday, March 10th. If there are any questions, please contact Mrs. Budde, Salk SLP, at lana.budde@fraserk12.org, or Ms. Chinn, Salk SW, at alina.chinn@fraserk12.org.

The program will start promptly at 6:00 p.m. Parents are to report to the RMS gym, where they will meet the administrators, counselors, and academic department heads. Students will gather in the cafeteria, where their tour will begin.

Therapy Dog Update
I have receive a lot of emails about the excitement of Charlie visiting the school. I wanted to provide an update to let everyone know that we are currently putting Charlie's visits on hold while we work out details on Charlie visiting in a manner that is safe for all students. As I mentioned in the first announcement, Charlie's visits are intended to be positive and we do not wish to cause fear and anxiety with any students that may have a fear of animals or sever allergies. I will continue to provide updates as we come up with a plan. I have left the original announcement below for those who may not have saw it. It also includes the opt. out form if you do not wish to have your student interact with Charlie once a plan is in place.
Salk has been approved to have a therapy dog visit. Charlie, the English Creme Golden Retriever, will be visiting once a week starting in March. Not only is Charlie a certified therapy dog, but he is one of my family dogs and I am so excited he will be joining the Salk family. Studies have shown that therapy dogs have the ability to increase positive emotions, promote engagement in learning activities and positive attitudes toward learning, reduce negative behaviors, as well as encourage prosocial behaviors including acting as a social catalyst to facilitate social interactions with others.
Charlie is a certified therapy dog after completing his training and testing by The Alliance of Therapy Dogs. He has also earned the title of AKC Canine Good Citizen. I am also a certified therapy dog handler after completing my testing and observations by The Alliance of Therapy Dogs.
Charlie's purpose is to ease student's anxieties and increase positive emotions. We do not want his presence to cause fear or anxiety. Charlie will be introduced in a positive manner and students will be instructed on how to interact with him. Parents have the ability to opt out of having their student interact with Charlie. If you DO NOT want your student to be around Charlie, then please fill out the opt out form linked here.
For the safety of students with allergies and Charlie, he will not be in the lunch room. Charlie will also remain out of classrooms in which parents have a student who opt out. Charlie will be under my supervision and kept on a leash at all times.
Charlie is looking forward to visiting. He would like to thank the Salk PTO for donating some supplies for him be a part of Salk. More information about Charlie and our therapy dog program will be presented in future scoops. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
Go Seahawks,
Anthony Birkmeier

Please Watch the Forecast
Weather is Michigan is crazy. We have seen some beautiful warm days followed by bitter cold days. Please be sure to send your child to school dressed for the weather each day. Students may need warm coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and/or boots on any given day as we start to transition to Spring.
Please take time to label each and every item- because our lost and found gets bombarded with lost winter accessories throughout the season.
Please note that, per Board Policy, we will be having outdoor morning lineup and heading outdoors for our 20 minute recess(es) if the windchill is 10 degrees or warmer.
Time outdoors is time well spent for kids, in all seasons.
