Going to TOWN!
During Semester 1, Stage 3 implemented the Taking Off With Numeracy (TOWN) initiative which focuses on improving numeracy skills in students. We started our Maths lessons with a TOWN activity as a warm-up before heading to town with Maths. We used our strategies and problem-solving skills to manipulate numbers and solve number problems. We also had some 'Number Talks' to discuss the different strategies we used to solve number problems.
Ready to Read!
During Semester 1, we had Buddy Reading with 2L. We were able to listen to our buddies read while helping them with their reading. We were also improving our fluency while we read to our buddies in 2L.
It All Matters!
During Term 1, we learnt about different states of matter through studying the topic, 'What's the Matter?'. We conducted a range of experiments to observe and compare the differences in the properties and behaviour of solids, liquids and gases. We were learning to understand the different states of matter in order to make predictions about the effect of temperature on the state of particular substances. To end the unit, we conducted an ice-cream experiment where our goal was to turn a liquid cream mixture into ice-cream. Even though the ice cream did not taste great, our learning intention was achieved.
Going Green!
During Term 2, Fairvale PS had a garden competition to promote a love for gardening and sustainability; our gardens had to be made out of a recycled material. Our class conducted research to come up with ideas in small groups before presenting it to the class. As a class, we brought bottles in for the class garden and some of us had lots of fun planting. We were also fortunate to have many other planting opportunities around the school.
Roving Robots!
As a STEM session, we learnt about block coding to code ev3 robots. We had a series of basic challenges to complete before our ev3s were taking to the track. We learnt that to succeed, failure is imperative. Through perseverance, resilience, and constant reflection of our failures, we succeeded! We are looking forward to more exciting STEM sessions in Semester 2!
