Dr. Rachel Williams, Principal
From the Principal
Dear Parents,
What a fun Saturday we had last week! We started with the Colt’s Cup bright and early and a fun time was had by all. Our kids really enjoy this low-key race and it is always a success. The winners of the race (shown below) were: Bridger Hobbs, Josie Fratesi, Matthew Bert, Cara Tenhundfeld, Benji Wirka, Audrey Grose, Cameron Kennedy, Grayson Horack, Caden Murphy, Ellie Grace McLoughlin, Paige Moreau, Sawyer Ricketts, and Harper Whitehart. Special thanks to our PE Coaches, Mr. Abel and Mr. Cornelius, for their leadership. Also thank you to our parent volunteers who coordinated a great deal behind the scenes, Natalie Murphy and Georgia Hine.
Afterwards, our hands on clean-up day occurred and some significant work was completed outside. Thanks to our speaker, Holly from the Chattahoochee Nature Center for giving her time to visit our school. Special thanks to Daisy Troop #19180, and the Hobbs, Finol-Bishop, Herbert, and Tosyali families as well as Jeff McLaughlin. Please enjoy some pictures below.
We’ve had a very quiet and uneventful week with testing occurring in grades 3 and 5. Our teachers have been so proud of our student’s performance and dedication to doing their best each day. Our students are always prepared to do their best work because of the quality of teaching they receive daily. Our staff focuses on delivering a curriculum with rigor followed by teaching grade level standards. Students in fourth grade have a little more time to practice, but they are up next! Interesting fact, 47% of our fourth graders scored a Level 4 when they completed the test in 3rd grade. That is almost half of the grade level scoring at the highest level you can obtain! WOW!
As a follow-up to our proposed options for after school care and after school enrichment for next year, the district is currently preparing an updated menu of exciting after school care and enrichment options, including Right At School, and will have it to share before the end the school year. At this time, the informational meeting that was scheduled for Wednesday evening is being postponed until I receive more information. I will let you know when the rescheduled meeting will be held. Right now, please hold off on registering or getting a reimbursement on a previous registration. Thank you so much for your patience.
This year, we have been dealing with some challenges. I will not lay them out specifically here, but what I would ask is that as the role models and adults in our kid’s lives we lead with kindness, empathy, and truth. I have fielded emails from numerous parents over the last month and held many face to face meetings. If you ever have a concern, our admin team has an open-door policy. We will meet with you in person or via phone and always share what we can about any event that takes place at CCES. It saddens me to hear rumors that spread so quickly in our community, and often times, when the story circles back, it has grown to contain many untruths. I, as well as my staff, went into education because of children and our love for them, ALL OF THEM! In public school we accept all children and we are held to high standards while following proper county procedures and protocols. In addition, our school staff must follow the Georgia Code of Ethics for Educators. This includes characteristics such as professionalism and confidentiality. So often we are faced with questions we just simply cannot answer. I cannot tell you how proud I am to be a public school educator each day and my last five years at CCES have been some of the best in my career. I would ask for your continued support of our school, our staff, and me as the leader as we finish out this school year.
Finally, I will leave you with something I feel I speak about very often. We now live in a world where social media is used daily by most people. Bullying occurs by kids and adults behind a screen in an instant because people have access to devices at their fingertips. Each week as a principal I am made aware of these things. Whether they involve my staff, my kids or me, it is all hurtful. We love our school and it is the place we chose to come to work to daily. Now is a great time to reiterate a lesson we teach our children and it involves 5 letters that spell THINK.
T-Is is True?
H-Is it HELPFUL?
I-Is it INSPIRING?
N-Is it NECESSARY?
K-Is it KIND?
I would ask that when speaking on social media, you keep these ideas in mind. In fact, I will go a step further and say, do not post when you are emotional or upset. If you have questions about a person or our school, I am typically available around the clock via email. Our community plays a role in developing our school culture, and we would like that to continue to remain positive. We have worked so hard to get where we are!
I hope everyone has a great weekend. Mrs. Haltrecht and I will be representing CCES at the Fulton County Job Fair tomorrow at the Georgia World Congress Center for much of the day. We want to wish our chorus the best of luck as they will be singing tomorrow night at the Georgia SWARM game in Gwinnett.

georgia Milestones testing 4/15/19 - 5/14/19
The Georgia Milestones testing window will open on April 15th, 2019. Georgia Milestones will measure how well students have mastered content and skills outlined in the state-adopted standards in language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. The results are used for evaluation, decision-making, and instructional improvement. On March 7th, the district will conduct a system technology check where students will participate in a practice test. Students in 3rd and 5th grade will be taking the Georgia Milestones on the same dates and times in April. Students in 4th grade will take the test the first week of May. In addition to the longer testing window, students will only take one section of each content area per day except for Social Studies and Science in 5th grade. Although there are makeup testing days scheduled at the end of each grade levels completion, if time permits during the testing window, rolling makeups will take place in the afternoon. To ensure that your child has an opportunity to perform at his or her best, you can help by ensuring your child is present and on time each morning. If possible, avoid scheduling doctor/dentist appointments during the testing period. As a reminder, guests, volunteers or parents will not be allowed in the building during the entire testing window. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Haltrecht our testing coordinator.

Kid Chess Tournament
Our Kid Chess Team Tournament, held at Brookwood on Saturday, April 13, was a huge success! We had over 200 participants from many of our schools and all our chess players had a great time. Our tournament was divided into two groups: Grades K-2 and 3-5. The top three scores of each school were averaged to find the top five schools in each section.
Crabapple Crossing chess players came in fourth place in the grade 3-5 group! Congratulations to Michael McLoughlin, Jonathan Thai, and Akshat Vummadi.
Pre-registration is now open for fall semester 2019 as well as Summer Camp 2019. Register online HERE or call 770-575-5802. Kid Chess! Chess makes you smart, we make it fun!
