Social Studies - History Lesson: Americans Long Ago

We will begin a unit on Americans Long Ago with lessons on Pilgrims and The Mayflower

Life of a Pilgrim Child

This week we will read all about the life of a pilgrim child. We will read and discuss what pilgrim children ate, how they dressed, how they were expected to behave, in addition to their working, playing, and schooling.

Students will create a pilgrim craft and will make inferences based on their clothing.

These are a few topics we will discuss over the next two weeks

  1. When did the Mayflower reach Plymouth? (November 11, 1620)
  2. About how many people were on board the Mayflower? (102)
  3. How long was the journey from England? (66 days)
  4. How many men signed the Mayflower Compact? (41)

Were women allowed to sign the compact?

What did the women do on the ship? What did the men do?

Did the children play on the ship?

What were some things the pilgrims ate on their journey?

What was the Indian's name that helped the Pilgrims?
