Platypuses live in freshwater rivers, creeks, and lakes. They make there entrances hidden vary well and above water. They can be found in a big area from Queensland to Victoria and Tasmania Australia. Platypuses dig holes in the ground near rivers or body's of water. They do this with there claws. Some Burrows can be up to 25 meter long. They dig there holes small so when they go in it squeezes the water out of them. Some platypuses


Platypuses can walk on land and swim in water. Platypuses can swim fast up to _____mph. They have a big 12 cm tail that helps them swim faster. They have water proof fur and they close there eyes and ears to keep water out. They can stay under water for over 2 minutes. When platypuses go up on land their webbed feet turn into claws to move around better and dig holes.

Body Covering

Platypuses are covered in warm waterproof brown fur. Platypuses are usually around 45 cm long with a 12 cm tail. They can weigh up to 2.3 kilograms. Males are usually larger than females and males have a small sharp spur behind their ankle.

Platypuses eat all kinds of creatures in the water. They go hunting right before dawn and around sunset. they use there rubbery bill to scoop up animals such as shrimp, insects, larva, and other small water animals. Platypuses have a special nerve in there bill that seances any-type of there pray so it can hunt it. When platypuses collect there food and store it in there cheeks until they get to the surface to eat it. Platypuses don't have teeth, but they have horny pads on there upper and lower jaw that they crush there pray with.

During mating season males fight with there burs behind there back ankles. these spurs are venous and can kill other platypuses but are not fetal to humans. Although there spurs are not fatal they will make a great amount of pain and will make you swell. Females lay eggs in a nest that they make out of damp grass and leaves. Damp grass is the perfect temperature for the young. when making the nest the female, she gathers the plants and carry's them with there tails. When the female lays the eggs she seals the hole with soil. Platypuses have mating season from June to October. They usually lay 1-2 eggs.

When platypuses swim they swim low and smooth. If you ever see a platypus you will know because you will see 3 humps moving really fast. Platypuses can swim up to 1 meter per second, although they usually only swim around 0.4 meter per second. Platypuses body's are not good for walking on land. When platypuses do walk on land they use 30% more energy then when there swiming.
