Student Success Act
Speak Up 4 Student Success: HB 3427 - Student Success Act
The Oregon Legislature passed and the Governor signed the $2 billion Student Success Act (HB 3427) in Spring 2019. This is an historic and much needed investment in K-12 schools. The Beaverton School District could be able to access an estimated $34 million per year through a state application process.
School districts are required to apply for funds, and must engage their community in a needs assessment process prior to the application for funds. We will host a series of Community Conversations - Speak Up 4 Student Success in several locations throughout the BSD. Schools will also be engaging their communities in these conversations during September and October.
Please join us to talk about what student success looks like in the Beaverton School District? What is going well in Beaverton schools? What areas/services/programs could we improve?
Your voice matters! We welcome your perspective and opinion.
Speak Up 4 Student Success Community Conversations offered in English & Spanish:
· Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at Southridge High School, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

Reminders
Student Parking
Senior students have first priority for parking spaces. There are only 396 parking spots available. With that in mind, for the upcoming school year, the following procedures will be in place for the assignment of parking spaces:
- Parking in the student parking lot for the first 2 weeks or so will not be assigned and will be first come, first park.
- Starting on Wednesday, September 4, any Senior who would like to have a parking pass must fill out the following form and turn it in to Mr. Westhora in the front office or during both lunches. The form must be submitted by Friday, September 6 before school is over. Only Seniors with a valid driver's license and information about the make/model/license number for any car they might drive to school can apply for a parking pass.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jZ92ThQ1zuXD9CMZmX3zYb0l9WInen695kqUOjMXM4k/edit?usp=sharing - Starting on Tuesday, September 10, all Seniors who submitted their parking application form will then be allowed to purchase their parking pass and will be assigned a parking spot during both lunches. The cost of a parking permit for this school year will be $20, which is in line with other high schools in the area. All parking permits will be attached to a specific numbered parking space.
- Starting on Thursday, September 12, depending on how many Seniors get an assigned parking spot, Juniors may submit a parking agreement form for a possible chance to get a spot as well. Juniors have until Friday, September 13 at the end of the school day to submit the form to Mr. Westhora in the main office or during both lunches. If there are not enough spots for all Juniors who apply, there will be a lottery selection process.
- Starting on Tuesday, September 17, all Juniors who submitted their parking application or were selected from a lottery process will then be allowed to purchase their parking pass and will be assigned a parking spot during both lunches.
- The start of enforcing assigned parking spaces will occur on Wednesday, September 18 after parking spaces have been assigned to Seniors and Juniors. Until that date, student parking will be on a first-come first-served basis, in areas that are specifically designated for student parking.
- Sophomores are not eligible for a parking space.
- Starting on September 18, a waiting list will begin for valid drivers who wish to have a spot in the near future.
Parking permits and spaces may be revoked by Westview at any time, for reasons including but not limited to: poor attendance, violation of student conduct policies, and others.
Parking and Traffic Flow
We want to make you aware of our current parking situation at Westview High School. Most neighborhoods surrounding Westview now have restricted parking on their streets. They have signs posted on their streets that say "No Parking Except By Permit." Please do not park in their neighborhoods to avoid ticket fees and/or potential towing.
Traffic flow before and after school can be chaotic. We would like to minimize the chaos as much as possible by establishing clear routes for drop-off and pick-up locations. We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding. The true secret to arriving to school on-time and with less traffic is arriving early.
The traffic route on the North-side is for drop-offs, and the other traffic route is on the South-side for student drivers. On the South-side, remember that students are parking and then walking to the building. We do not want any drop-offs happening here. Please do not drop off students on the South side. All Drop-offs should only happen on the North Side. Please follow the route on the map.
Parents and Students, please be kind, respectful, and follow all traffic and parking rules when driving and parking on school grounds.
For those who are wanting to purchase a parking permit, more information coming soon.

Technology
New this week on our WHS Technology for Parents and Students Site http://bit.ly/whsfuture:
Sprint 1Milion Project
In 2017, the Beaverton School District was awarded 2,000 hotspots from the Sprint 1Million Project Foundation. The devices provide free wireless service for up to 4 years to eligible high school students in grades 9-12 who do not have adequate internet access at home.
To help solve this problem, a team from the Beaverton School District researched opportunities and wrote a grant for the Sprint 1Million Project.
These devices will provide free wireless service for up to 4 years to eligible high school students in grades 9-12 who do not have adequate internet access at home. If your student needs a device, please have them contact either Ms. Schulz in room S216 or Mrs. Dean in the library. To download a consent form, click this link: http://bit.ly/sprintconsent20
Canvas
We have updated the process by which the Canvas observer role is created for parents and guardians. All active ParentVUE account users now have a Canvas observer role. Moving forward, any parent or guardian who activates their ParentVUE account will automatically have an associated Canvas account created. Instructions for our parents and guardians are at the link below. http://bit.ly/bsdcanvasparent20
Chromebooks
At the beginning of each school year, all students in grades 6-12 will receive a Chromebook, and should pay the $20 to be enrolled in the District's Chromebook Damage/Loss Protection Program. The $20 is per school year per Chromebook. If your student is bringing their own device, please have them complete the form located in the library.
Stylus:
The Chromebook this year also comes with a STYLUS that is SUPER NIFTY. It can be stored inside the Chromebook when not in use. The first stylus comes free with the Chromebook, but if your student loses the stylus, it is $15 to replace it which is not covered by insurance. If they have not received their stylus yet, have them come to the library to check one out. (More to come on how students can use their stylus in all of their classes.)
New options this year:
Our devices now have access to a curated GooglePlay store, where students can download and access educationally awesome apps including the Microsoft Office Suite, Sketchpad, and even GoogleDrive. At the beginning of the year, organization is paramount. To help your student structure their online binder, here are two helpful handouts:
