Panther Pause
21 years of Pride at Colleyville Heritage High School
10.20.17
Panthers,
We have officially made a quarter of the way through the school year, and it seems like yesterday that we were starting school. I guess the cliche' that time flies when you are having fun really does apply to me this school year. I think we are off to a great start since we have already set many school records, and we aren't even to the half way point to the school year! CHHS set a record of the number of National Merit Semi-Finalist and now Commended Scholars. You can read more about our commended scholars at the following link. A Commended Scholar is a student scoring in the top 3% of all the students nationally on the PSAT exam. This represented a lot of hard work from both the students and the teachers, and is a huge accomplishment.
On the extra-curricular front of things at CHHS, our programs have demonstrated their excellence time and time again. Tuesday night was a big night as our band competed in the first leg of their UIL competition receiving all superior ratings and moving on to the area competition on October 28. While the band was competing, our volleyball team was defeating our crosstown friends en route to clinching another district championship. Before both of those groups competed, the tennis team advanced to the next round of their playoffs as they completed a clean sweep to prepare for a big match today with Wichita Falls Rider at GHS. If you are looking for some fun over the next couple of days, come out and watch our Theater Departments Productions: A Comedy of Errors and Julius Ceasar. As usual, these productions are amazing and are a great representation of what we have come to expect from our great students. Our football team closed out a big win last night over the Poly Parrots, setting up a big game next Friday with our crosstown friends as we try for another district championship. As you can see, it is truly a great time to be a Panther!! Have a great weekend and GO PANTHERS!!

Define what PRIDE means to you at CHHS.
Pride at CHHS means having confidence in what you do in your everyday life and not being afraid of trying new things. It also means that it is important to be humble and not brag about your accomplishments. Being prideful, to me, means being a leader and paving your own path without letting anyone stop you.

An Update for GCISD Bus Riders
In June 2017, Governor Abbott signed Senate Bill 693, which requires all buses model year 2018 or newer, to be equipped with three-point seat belts for each passenger. The buses will have 76 seat belts in instances where students can ride three to a row, but can be adapted to seat two per row. While the Bill was signed into law, and the district must comply, there was no additional state funding allocated for this requirement.
In the 2016 Bond, voters approved the purchase of seven new buses. Although seat belts were not included in the original proposal, the buses purchased with bond funds will be equipped with three-point seat belts. These purchases will be spread over a four-year period. The first two buses with seat belts were recently received into the GCISD fleet and will begin service immediately.
Since GCISD is a Robin Hood district and estimates the payment to the State this year will be $44 million, there is no funding to purchase additional buses beyond the seven approved in the 2016 Bond.
Student safety is the number one priority in GCISD and the transportation department practices bus safety on a daily basis with riders. These practices will continue on all buses, regardless of the inclusion of seat belts.

CHHS Graduation Requirements
A note from the CHHS nurse
Medications at school! With over 2,000 students in our school, it is a huge task to keep up with all of the students who have medications here. We require permission forms for any medications at school. Emergency Inhalers and Epinephrine auto injectors are the only prescription medications that can be carried at school and a Dr.’s signature on the paperwork is required for students to carry it on their person. This paperwork is also needed for athletes who may leave the medications with the trainers. All prescriptions must have the pharmacy label attached with the student’s name and directions for use.
Other prescription medications are required to be kept in the clinic in a locked cabinet and will be administered in the clinic. Morning doses are to be given at home and later doses will be given at school. Again, a permission form and pharmacy label are required. We are happy to keep a backup dose of medication here for daily morning meds in case they are missed. Dr. signature is required on any controlled medications. We will not administer any non FDA approved medications or supplements.
The great thing we offer at high school that is different than our prior grade levels is the parent driven opportunity for students to carry over the counter (FDA approved) medications with them. We have a short permission slip that is filled out annually where parents can give their student permission to carry their OTC meds. The student also signs this form which spells out the rules to 1. Always keep in original container, 2. Do not share with others, 3. Take only as directed. If you feel your student is mature enough to abide by this, it may save you a trip to school once in a while. We do not provide any
medications to students that they did not bring. These rules help keep our campus a safer place. Medication abuse is very real. Please help us by providing us the right paperwork and information on your student. Also note that the students cars are
on school property when parked in student parking and they are subject to the same rules as what the student has in the school.
Here is the link to the district permission forms needed for medications.
I sincerely appreciate your help in getting this documentation! Faxed and email documents are accepted with Dr. signature (and parent signature) as long as Dr. contact information is provided.
