What's Going On in the Library?
January 2019
Families Invited to Participate in Mock Caldecott
Each January, the American Library Association awards the Caldecott Medal to the artist of "the most distinguished American picture book for children." Who will win in 2019? Well, first- and second-graders are going to make their pick in library, and we'll see how our choice lines up with the national award.
We are reading and discussing about a dozen books. You can see the list on this LibGuide page. I'm not sure exactly when we'll be voting in class, but next month's newsletter will include a link for families to cast their ballot from the finalists.
Expand Your Vocabulary
We will be practicing paraphrasing in 4th grade; having a good vocabulary makes the process easier. I wanted to let all families know about two sites that you can use to learn new words.
This site has several different subjects in addition to English vocabulary; every time you get an answer correct, 10 grains of rice are donated to the World Food Programme.
This site is set up as a giant competition between schools all over the country. If you click the link, it will take you the Oak Lawn Families page. You can set up an account and every word you get right will add points to our total.
