LONG TERM EFFECTS OF TOBACCO USE
WHAT CAN TOBACCO DO?
It is now well documented that smoking can cause chronic lung disease, coronary heart disease, and stroke, as well as cancer of the lungs, larynx, esophagus, mouth, and bladder. In addition, smoking is known to contribute to cancer of the cervix, pancreas, and kidneys.
LONG TERM EFFECTS
CANCER
Cigarette smoking causes many types of cancer, including cancers of the lung, esophagus, larynx (voice box), mouth, throat, kidney, bladder, pancreas, stomach, and cervix, as well as acute myeloid leukemia.
LUNG DISEASE
COPD is a condition that makes it hard to breathe and worsens over time. Cigarette smoking is the most common cause of COPD. Long-term exposure to other lung irritants—such as air pollution or chemical fumes—may also contribute to COPD
BIRTH DEFECTS
Babies born to moms who smoke aRe more likely to have certain birth defects compared to infants with mothers who don't smoke during pregnancy.
TEETH/MOUTH
Bad breathTooth discoloration Inflammation of the salivary gland openings on the roof of the mouth Increased build up of plaque and tartar on the teeth Increased loss of bone within the jaw Increased risk of leukoplakia, white patches inside the mouth Increased risk of developing gum disease, a leading cause of tooth loss Delayed healing process following tooth extraction, periodontal treatment, or oral surgery Lower success rate of dental implant procedures Increased risk of developing oral cancer
HEART
Every cigarette you smoke makes you more likely to get heart disease. Roughly 1 out of 5 deaths from heart disease is directly related to smoking.
People who smoke are two to four times more likely to get heart disease.
The nicotine in smoke:
- Reduces how much oxygen your heart gets
- Raises your blood pressure
- Speeds up your heart rate
- Makes blood clots more likely, which can lead to heart attacks or strokes
- Harms the insides of your blood vessels, including those in your heart
