Another positive would be that if provides stored water for months. But there are also negatives with one being it blocks the flow of silt. The other is that it prevents less freshwater from reaching the delta. The Sahara Desert is the largest in the world. In fact, it would be approximately about the size of the US. Sahara means "desert", which means it's name is actually "desert desert"!
