Moreau Messenger
December 2018
Note from Principal Toleman:
December is always a busy month and that is the case here at Moreau. Our Kindness Crew has implemented a month long challenge with each classroom being assigned a different day. Our band, chorus and orchestra are busy prepping for our first concert of the season on December 11th. Our teachers are working diligently to wrap up certain material before our holiday recess and planning some fun activities to keep students engaged this time of year.
We also have some upcoming HSA events that we are looking forward to. This Friday is Southy's Pajama Day. Students can pay $1.00 and wear their pajamas to school. All money collected goes directly to Southys for their Operation Adopt-A-Family. The week of December 10th-December 14th is our Holiday Shop. On December 14th, the HSA is hosting Parent's Night Out. For $2.00 a child you can drop them off from 6:30-8:30 so you can do some shopping or just enjoy a few hours to yourself. Finally, on 12/18 & 12/19 we have our Evening with Santa. Thank you to the HSA and our parent volunteers for making all of this happen.
This time of year can be stressful for children. Routines and schedules are different and emotions and energy is at an all time high. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you need any assistance or support. We are always here to help. I hope you all have a wonderful December. I am sure it will go by just as fast as November did.
Respectfully,
Rebecca Toleman
Stinky's Staff Spot Light
She is gentle, kind, thoughtful and raising two beautiful boys.
She is the kindnest, most helpful person I know. She is always willing to lend a helpful hand and her kindness shows through her sweet boys.
She is always smiling and happy.
She is patient and friendly.
She has the most beautiful smile and she begins her day with a smile, every day. She is always kind and works hard to support the students in everything she does.
She is so sweet and so good to the kids.
She brightens my day when we say hello. Her kindness is unexplainable.
Mrs. Cloud, thank you for all you do! We appreciate you.
MOREAU ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOCUSES ON KINDNESS!
Moreau Elementary School students are focusing on kindness this year as part of the theme of the year, “Kindness Begins with Me.” Each day, students and staff are discussing ways to be kind both in school and outside of school.
However, Mrs. Pisani and Mrs. Reinemann’s fourth-grade class has taken its job of spreading kindness to a whole new level! How are they making Moreau, and in turn the community, a better place?
- Each morning, a fourth-grade student greets the children as they come in with a high five and a good morning.
- At the end of the day, two students stand holding the doors and wish everyone a good day.
- Fourth-grade students have been practicing reading books on kindness and then going into other classrooms and read to younger students.
- They are working on a kindness handbook to share with each classroom that outlines steps to take to be kind.
- They created a kindness challenge board that showcases a new way to be kind each week.
- They leave notes of encouragement for classes in the cafeteria.

Kindergarten Fun!
December is one of the most exciting months in Kindergarten! The children are learning so much in school and are really looking forward to the snow and winter activities. Your child will continue to work on sound spelling and writing in class. Math has been really fun because we are experts with the numbers and 2D/3D shapes. We will introduce Module 3 in Mathematics which is comparing length, weight, and capacity. We will also be learning about the December celebrations around the world and the beginning of a new season, WINTER!
The children will need to have the letters and their sounds mastered. Now that the letters have all been introduced, practicing letter formation and printing neatly from top to bottom is an important skill to work on nightly, as well as, independently applying their letter sounds to read and write.
Please be sure to dress your child in layers and look for notes from your child’s teacher to see if we will be going outside to play in the snow or make a snowman!
A big THANK YOU to our homeroom parents and classroom helpers who have been graciously organizing parties and working in our classrooms this year. You may be getting a phone call to send in party supplies for our future celebrations. Thanks again for all that you do to make Moreau School a great Place to be!

Second Grade Update:
We’ve been working very hard in second grade! We’ve started reading non-fiction books and focusing on the main topic and details. We had a lot of fun creating our turkeys in disguise and then writing about their adventures so they didn’t get eaten for Thanksgiving!
We conducted our first science experiment called Cookie Erosion. Be sure to ask your child what they learned about erosion and weathering and how to know the difference.
We are gearing up for the holidays in December! Mark your calendar for December 19th at 1:30 to come and help us with our gingerbread houses. This is a second-grade tradition that you don’t want to miss!
We wish all of our second-grade families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
See you in 2019!

Third Grade Is So Much Fun!
In science and social studies, our students have learned about geography and where we live on this wonderful planet, and we've also learned about the water cycle, the importance of recycling and keeping our beautiful planet clean. Changes in weather and climate are fascinating, so we've we've learned about the difference between weather and climate!
In ELA, we have been working on finishing our personal narratives, we've learned about character traits, and we've begun learning how to answer implicit and explicit comprehension questions while reading! We love to make predictions when we read, and it helps us better understand a character's motivation and what's happening in the story!
We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your loved ones!
Thanks again for your support!
