Battle of the Books
EXTRA OPTIONAL BATTLE OF THE BOOKS MEETING TOMORROW MORNING:
We will have an optional “extra” meeting to practice beginning tomorrow, on Tuesday mornings. Instead of going straight to class, have your child come the media center to practice for the Battle of the Books competition until 8:15 a.m.
No need to come earlier than usual – we’ll have plenty of time to practice.
We will continue to meet on Fridays during lunch, therefore, if it is impossible for your child to come to the extra Tuesday morning meetings, it is no problem.
Just be sure they are reading the books from the list and trying to remember the author’s names, as they go, and main details from the books they read (ie. characters, plot features, settings, etc.)
NOTE to REMEMBER: The competition questions will always begin with…”In what book…” and the answer will always be a book’s title and author.
T-SHIRT UPDATE:
I have put in an order for the t-shirts. I am not sure of the cost yet, but I’m guessing around $5.00 each. We will wear them every Friday as well as on competition days. (TBA)
SCHOOL AND COUNTY COMPETITIONS:
Stay tuned for further information about our school competition’s date. Winners in grades 3-4 will compete against each other (all three teams) and since we only have one 5th grade team, they will automatically advance to the county competition on May 4th.
Our school 3-4 competition will be held during the school day in late April (special date TBA).
The Forsyth County competition will be held after school (time TBA) at Shiloh Point Elementary. You will be responsible for your child’s transportation if they are eligible for the county competition.
Thanks so much to all! The team has been working hard and I feel that they’re going to do great with a little more work!
Six Flags Read to Succeed
Please remind your students to record the books they are reading to earn a free Six Flags ticket. Also, please remind them that they need to record their reading on the new eReading logs, not on paper. In order for you to receive a free ticket, you must have at least 8 students from your class register. Mrs. Rodriguez’s class is currently in the lead with the most participants! The deadline to submit the logs has been extended to April 17, but I would like to have the eReading logs completed before spring break. Happy reading!.
Dreambox Student Usage
Now that students are in Dreambox and using it on a regular basis, please make sure you are checking student activity weekly. In the reports section of Dreambox, you can view how many "in progress" lessons a student has. If you notice a lot of in-progress lessons, please conference with that student and remind them that they need to have at least 5 COMPLETED lessons each
week. An idea would be to take the first 5 minutes of each grade level minutes to look at your students' progress in Dreambox.
How to View Student Usage in Dreambox
Action Item:
Check-in with students on your dashboard to see how many "in progress" lessons there are. Remind students that they must complete 5 lessons a week.
Georgia Milestones Message-Geometry Practice
Attention 3rd, 4th, & 5th-grade teachers:
Since Geometry is on the county pacing guide for the 4th quarter, students will not get much exposure to these types of questions before the Georgia Milestones. Dr. Lack thought of a great idea to use Dreambox to assign Geometry lessons to students. By doing this, students will have some practice with Geometry before the Georgia Milestones.
Here are directions for using the Assign Focus tab to assign lessons to your class:

Outlook Update
An update will be pushed out for Microsoft Office. After the update, you may see this pop up when you launch Outlook. Use the @forsythk12.org version of your username, not the forsyth.k12.ga.us version.
Junk Email
Junk mail is the primary ingress point for phishing/malware emails so compliance with filtering is a crucial piece of our defenses. With that being said, some emails from parents get tagged as junk and end up in this folder. Please make sure you are checking your junk email folder at least once a week if not more often.
Here are directions on Junk Email in Outlook 365.
Action Item:
Check the junk email folder in Outlook at least once a week.
SIOP Strategies: Treasure Hunt
Using Apple Clips in the Classroom
Need a device?
-Have students bring in devices from home. If they are working collaboratively, you will only need a few.
-Borrow iPads from the Media Center or STEM Lab. Vickie and Courtnie have the iPads but they are always willing to share if they have a heads up!
