From the Counselors - Common Sense Media for Parents
Week one: Screen Time
A note from the School Counselors (Mrs. Ventura and Mrs. W-Y)
Common Sense Media is a great resource for parents to use if they have questions or concerns about the use of technology with their children. This week, we thought we would share the tips from parents and educators around the topic of screen time.
“Setting screen-time limits -- and helping kids moderate their own habits -- are all about finding the right balance for your family's needs and lifestyle. We offer advice for creating a realistic schedule, setting age-appropriate guidelines on TV time, finding the first websites for young kids to use, handling violent media, and managing kids' cell phone use.” www.commonsensemedia.org
Check out the link below for the answers to some common parent questions around screen time such as:
“How much screen time is okay for my children?”
“Are some types of screen time better than others?”
“What should I do about my child’s screen time addiction?”
“Is TV really bad for kids?”
“What is the right age to get my child a tablet?”

Adopt a Sailor
Dear Concord Families,
For the 10th year, Concord has the privilege of adopting a group serving our country. This year is very special as we are adopting a sailor who was a CES student and who graduated from Garnet Valley in 2012! She attended Penn State, graduated in 2016 with a BS in Meteorology and Oceanography and completed 4 years of ROTC!! Needless to say, we are all extremely proud of Samantha and are humbled to be able to give back to her and her fellow Sailors and Marines.
She is currently stationed on the USS Bataan which has been deployed to the Middle East and Europe. She will be gone several months.
We are asking for support from any CES families and staff who would like to participate.
Please find a list of suggested items below:
healthy snacks (nothing that may melt)
water flavor packets
adult coloring books, colored pencils and pens. Small pencil sharpeners
playing cards or small games
word search , Sudoku or crossword puzzle books
SPF chapstick
Bobbi-pins (women must wear hair off shirt collar)
Hair Gel
baby wipes, Clorox wipes
laundry pods
small personal hand sanitizers that can attach to belts or fit in pockets
any hygiene items
We will collect items from April 18th thru April 28th. We are very grateful to our HSA for providing us the funds to cover the postage.
Samantha would love to hear from our students, we will include any notes or cards they provide.
Thank you in advance for your generosity,
Sue Baumes
Introducing Community Living and Learning
The Garnet Valley Special Education Department has established a Community Living and Learning program to support the development of students with special learning needs at the high school level. We have leased an apartment to provide an authentic learning environment for the students to acquire independent living skills, work skills, and life skills.
We are seeking donations from our Garnet Valley community to support and sustain the program. This support would include:
- Gift Cards to local grocery stores and department stores (Home Depot, Staples, Home Goods, Best Buy)
- Purchasing items at our Target Registry (Listed as Garnet Valley CLL Apartment)
- Direct cash donations through My School Bucks Click Here to Donate
Any donation size would be appreciated!!
We are also seeking a special donation of a transportation van to support our needs for work schedules and grocery runs.
For businesses who wish to donate $500, the company name will be listed on the district website. For donations of $1,000, the company name and logo or link to website will be listed.
Donations are Tax Deductible, and will be accepted at Garnet Valley School District, Attn: Community Living & Learning, 80 Station Road, Glen Mills, PA 19342
Please join us in our initiative to enhance the educational programming for our students with special needs.

CTC Quick Tip
Garnet Valley CTC Quick Tip #32
Did you know? May is Mental Health Awareness Month. To prepare for May, Aevidum at GVHS created a video that was shared through morning announcements. Stickers were distributed to everyone. The green stickers have captions focused on reducing the stigma of mental illness. Second period teachers held classroom discussions based on the video. Aevidum hoped to let students know that, they do not need to suffer in silence, there is help.
Call to action… What has this got to do with Garnet Valley High School or Garnet Valley Middle School? Consider the following results from the 2015 PAYS survey: 21.6% of 6th graders, 28.5% of 8th graders, 34.6% of 10th graders and 30.1 % of 12th graders "Felt depressed or sad MOST days in the past 12 months." All of these statistics show an increase from 2013.
