Dear Families and Students,
I hope everyone had a wonderful start to the second quarter! This week's newsletter is full of wonderful recaps and important reminders!
To honor the Orlando Science Schools Day which is proclaimed by the City of Orlando November 4th, we are inviting all parents and students to the 2nd Annual Orlando Science Schools PVO Sponsored Fall Festival THIS Saturday, October 20th, 2018! We cannot wait to see you there!
We are excited to announce that Ms. Killian was selected as our August Teacher of the Month! Ms. Killian was nominated by her fellow colleagues and we would like to thank her for being a positive role model in our school.
Last week the OSS ELA Department held their annual Literacy Night Event, please see the full recap below. We would like to thank everyone who helped make this event a huge success and those who attended. This week's newsletter also features a recap of our Hispanic Heritage Night that was held on October 5th, 2018 at our Orlando Science High School Campus!
Congratulations to our O.R.C.A.S Teacher Character Award Winners for the month of September! These teachers were nominated by their fellow colleagues for displaying one of the CORE VALUES. The list of winners and why they were chosen may be found below.
Orcas this is just a reminder that next Friday, October 26th 2018 Orlando Science Schools will be closed due to a Student holiday/teacher professional day/ teacher non-workday. We will resume normal operation on Monday, October 29th 2018!

Celebrate Orlando Science Schools Day at the 2nd Annual Orlando Science Schools PVO Sponsored Fall Festival this Saturday October 20th 2018!
To honor the Orlando Schools Day which is proclaimed by the City of Orlando November 4th, we are inviting all parents and students to the 2nd Annual Orlando Science Schools PVO Sponsored Fall festival THIS Saturday, October 20th, 2018!
Wrist Band Information
Wrist bands are only necessary for the children who are participating in the games listed in the description below. Adults do not need to purchase a wrist band to attend the event. Wrist bands should be purchased for children ages 3 and up. Age 2 and under do not need to have a wrist band.
Your wristband entitles you to unlimited use of the inflatables houses, face painters, trackless train and select games. Food (including halal and vegetarian options) will be available to purchase besides the carnival favorites of cotton candy, popcorn and snow cones. The event also includes a raffle (pre-purchase tickets here or at the event), silent auction baskets, bake sale, vendors and a mini wellness fair. Something for everyone to enjoy!

- Single Wrist bands - $15/ea (for children ages 3 and above not required for adults)
-Family 2 children pack – 2 wrist bands, 2 Lunch tickets, 20 raffle tickets, 10 food/activity tickets = $65
-Family 4 children pack- 4 wrist bands, 2 Lunch tickets, 20 raffle tickets, 10 food/activity tickets = $95
August Teacher of the Month: Ms. Killian
We are pleased to announce that our August Teacher of the Month is Ms. Killian. Ms. Killian was nominated by her fellow colleagues and we would like to thank her for being a positive role model in our school. We would also like to thank her dedication she shows to her students and colleagues each day, she is always willing to lend a hand!

C(Celebrate Diversity)-Serena L.
Serena is a member of the International Club and since day one she has shown her commitment for a great International Night! Every idea that she brings to the table, she makes sure that we are including every country and her diversity awareness is amazing!
A(Advocate for a Safe Learning Environment)- Sahiti Y.
Sahiti is very attentive, organized, and well-prepared for class all of which contribute to a safe environment in a Science class. She meets and exceeds the high standards and expectations for safety by following the procedures in class. She is aware of her surroundings and takes every precaution to ensure the safety of herself and everyone around her. She also goes above and beyond and helps others to do the same which overall helps us to keep a safe learning environment in the class.
S(Strive for excellence within a stimulating learning environment)- Gabrielle M.
Although shy at times, Gabby has already stepped out of her shell. This year, being one of the only inducted NJHS members, she took it up herself to create forms for our meetings to run more productively and smoother. She also helped with recruiting new members, our induction ceremony, and during our club meetings. She has always had high grades and impeccable behavior, but this year, she is a true leader. She has taken charge to ensure that her club is striving to meet their goals and that every meeting is handled with precision and productiveness.

O(Outreach towards community)-Mr.Koebe
Mr. Koebe assists elderly members of his community by helping with yard work, installing irrigation systems and helps to assist with storm preparation.
R(Respect and compassion for all)-Mr.Adair
Mr. Adair is fair and kind to all of the students he interacts with throughout the day and parents that he meets with after-hours. He is flexible in his scheduling, takes countless hours to grade work, and knows how to effectively communicate with the students. He is respectful and balanced in all aspects of education.
2018-2019 Hispanic Heritage Night Recap
The 2018-2019 Hispanic Heritage Night Celebration took place on Friday, October 5th, 2018 at the OSHS campus! The event was a huge success, and we would like to thank all of the staff members at both Lynx and Technology High School Campuses that hard to make this event one to remember for our families. Thank you all of the student performers and presenters who contributed to the Hispanic Heritage Night and worked to make this event a true celebration of Hispanic Heritage.
OCPS Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council Introduces Code of Conduct Videos
Orlando Science Families,

• Bringing weapons on campus
• Sexual harassment
To reinforce the message delivered by these videos, OSS will show these videos to middle/high school teachers and students once per quarter in homeroom classes on these dates:
- Q1: October 2nd 2018
- Q2: October 30th 2018
- Q3: January 15th 2019
- Q4: April 2nd 2019
2018-2018 Literacy Night
At this year’s Literacy Night the theme was “Moving through Literature” The cafeteria at OSS was decorated where students and guests felt as if they were walking through various books’ settings. Projects ranged from creative character profiles, theme parks jeopardy games, and movie trailer presentations. The evening was a huge success.!
Orlando Science High School Invites Professionals to Career Day on November 1st 2018!
Orlando Science High School Invites Professionals to Career Day! OSHS is hosting a 2018 Career Day on Thursday, November 1st from 8:30am-2:30pm. We would like to invite professionals from our community to visit OSHS classrooms so that they may share their professions with our students.
Presenters should expect to share a 10-20-minute presentation focused on their career followed by a Q & A session. The presentation may be a PowerPoint slideshow or any other kind of engaging format they wish. If you know professionals interested in sharing their career choices with students, please send them to the link below. Diversity is key, from firefighters, chefs, engineers...all are welcome! RETIREES TOO! Any experience is helpful. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mr. Stampas or Mrs. Singleton .

Box tops update: Collect #1 is coming!
Hello OSS Families! If you are saving Box Tops for our school, PLEASE turn them in by Wednesday, October 24th. We have 2 deadlines each school year to be able to receive 2 checks. Please remember that BOX TOPS are a wonderful FREE way to raise funds for our school. Each Box Top is worth $.10 and they really add up. Please make sure to continuously send these in so that I can mail them before their expiration dates. The monies received go to supporting our academic and sport teams, the PLTW (Project Lead the Way) along with many other OSS programs and classroom needs. If you would like to learn more about the Box Tops program go to www.btfe.com. Please register or login today. Make sure that you designate Orlando Science Schools as your school support.

Operation stock the library Book Drive
We would like to thank everyone once more for donating to the Lynx Lane Operation Stock the Library Book Drive. We have received so many fantastic donations and our shelves are becoming filled, we could not have done this without you!
Congratulations to the Fordham Family, you have been selected as the winner of our $25 Barnes and Nobel Gift Card for the 1st quarter!
Since our first Book Drive was such a huge success we will host another from Monday, October 8th 2018 until Friday, December 14th 2018. For those that you donated during our first Book Drive, you will still be eligible to win the 2nd Book Drive!

Student Walker and Bus Rider Release Form
Orcas who walk or take the Lynx Bus transportation must have "Walker/Bus Rider" form on file. If you need form you may find it below. Students must sign out at the front office before leaving school each day.

Join the OSS Parent Volunteer Organization!
Dear Orlando Science Lynx Lane and Technology High School Families,
It is time, once again, to join the Parent Volunteer Organization (PVO). Membership is $25 per family for returning families and $30 for new families, your membership dues go directly back into the school to provide items and supplies for our teachers. We are also asking that PVO members work with specific committees (School Improvement, Fundraising, Volunteer Work, Teacher Appreciation, Events, Etc.) Please utilize the SCHOOL PAY link below to pay your dues.
If you have questions, comments, or requests, you may email OSS.PVO@orlandoscience.org . A formal PVO committee, including president and vice-president, will be announced at the end of the first quarter of the 2018-2019 School Year. PVO will hold bi-monthly meetings that will inform parents of progress, agendas, and upcoming events.

2018-2019 Parent Teacher Conference Nights
Parent Teacher Conference Nights will take place during dates and times posted above. Sign Ups will take place beginning on the time and dates listed below. Please be advised OSS Staff Members are not permitted to sign up for a PTC for our Orca Families, so we ask that you please plan accordingly. We ask that once links are provided you read through the information carefully before selecting a time slot. Parents and Guardians may always email their student's teachers to make an appointment to meet that do not fall within these conference nights. Once spots are filled please email your student's teachers to arrange an appointment for another date and time, no additional spots will be added to these nights. There will be no wait list created, please check back for canceled time slots. Please be advised dates and times can change, and we will notify you via the weekly newsletter if they do.

PARKING: Parking will be available across the street at Columbia College and overflow parking will be at Magic Mall’s parking
lot (which connects to the back road by the soccer field that ends at Texas Ave.). Maya’s Carpool, OSS’s student transport service, will provide buses to and from the parking lot to the school.
This is where we need your help! We have various sponsorships available to fill. If you would like to be a business sponsor, individual sponsor, or know of a business that would be willing to be a sponsor, please contact us. We have been working diligently over the summer to bring this event to fruition.
Please feel free to contact our PVO Committee below for more information on sponsorship levels, to submit a sponsor referral, or if you would like to become involved with the PVO committee.
