Tiger Tales from Sanborn School
Week of May 9th, 2022
Dear Sanborn Families,
April and the beginning of May have been exciting months for Sanborn students. It is hard to believe that we have about four weeks left of school before summer break begins. There is still a lot of learning that will happen while we look forward to some fun end of the year events. Students in grades 2-6 completed Spring MAP testing in both reading and math during the month of April. Students in kindergarten and first grade completed Spring benchmarking during the month of April. This data will help inform instructional decisions for your students.
Thank you to all who were able to join us for the special PTA events over the last few weeks. Additionally, thank you to all of our families who were able to come to Open House on May 4th. We had a wonderful turnout at all of our events and enjoyed the time connecting with students and their families.
Congratulations to our March and April Golden Paw Award Winners:
-March: Mrs. Esbrook's fourth grade class and Mrs. Moore's first grade class, and
-April: Mr. Cohen's sixth grade class and Mrs. Krause's first grade class. A Golden Paw is awarded to an entire class who was displaying Sanborn's three tiger traits: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. Each of these classes have earned a special reward like extra recess or BINGO (weather dependent).
Thank you for your continued partnership over the course of the school year. We look forward to the excitement that the month of May brings. Please reach out to me with any questions you may have.
Warmly,
Kate Arenberg, Principal
Open House! May 4th, 2022!
Moving 15 Forward Meeting at Sanborn!
As you may have seen in the email from the District before spring break, the next step of the Moving 15 Forward initiative includes sharing the specifics of the proposal at community information sessions and seeking feedback from stakeholders. Board President Lisa Scuzupaj and Superintendent Dr. Laurie Heinz, along with members of the District’s administrative team, will be bringing this plan to the GMS/LS community on May 19th, from 6 - 7:30 pm at GMS in the library. In addition to the presentation at our school, meetings are scheduled at other schools in the District and in the broader community.
The presentations will provide an overview of the Moving 15 Forward plan with a particular focus on why this comprehensive plan provides all students enhanced and equitable educational opportunities and the chance to learn at near-neighborhood schools. The presentation will also include information specific to our school and any adjustments that may be made. There will be time for questions and answers during the meeting.
We hope that you are able to join us for the presentation. If you are not able to attend, you are welcome to attend any of the other school or community sessions. In addition, I will share the presentation in my newsletter that follows May 19th. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Additional Moving 15 Forward Meeting Options
#1 Virtual Session on May 18 from 6:30-8:00 pm
- Translation will be provided in any language! Requests need to be made in advance and can be made via a link in the flyer.
- Please share this flyer far and wide to help us get the word out! (scroll down and the flyer is translated into Polish, Bulgarian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish)
#2 In Person Session on May 24 from 6:30-7:30 pm at Winston Campus JH
- Presentation will be in Spanish.
- Please share this flyer far and wide to help us get the word out!
- There is a proposal to eliminate the bilingual overlay which impacts some of our Spanish speaking families pretty significantly. It's especially important for them to attend and learn about these changes first hand.
Earth Month: Plastic Bag Recycling
Thank you to everyone who brought plastic bags to school during the month of April. Sanborn collected over 200 pounds (yes, over 200 pounds!) of plastic bags that will be recycled. The winning grade level totals will be announced soon. Thank you to Clean Up Give Back Palatine for partnering with us!
Autism Awareness Week
Sanborn celebrated Autism Awareness Week at the beginning of April. The Sanborn AIME & MILE team held a coin wars drive which raised money that was donated to the Palatine Library. Third grade raised the most money and earned a special extra recess all together on Friday, April 29th. Students were encouraged to decorate infinity signs unique to their needs. The team hosted a spirit week which consisted of various sensory options to wear. The staff also ended the week by wearing t-shirts that read: "Everyone Communicates Differenty". Thank you to the AIME & MILE team for organizing Autism Awareness Week!
From the PTA
Thank you for everyone's support related to the Book Fair, Morning Munchies, Spring Fest, Bike to School Day, Staff Appreciation Week, and the Dance-a-thon! Many hours of planning went into these events and students and families enjoyed every moment! On behalf of the Sanborn staff, we thank you for your dedication and support of all of these events for our students and families! Thank you to the planning committees and volunteers for working so diligently on the details of the events.
Thank you for supporting the last Dine and Share at Lou Malnati's on March 30th. The PTA raised $323.02 from the event! Amazing!
The next PTA meeting is Tuesday, May 10th, at 6:30 p.m. in the library (or virtually: meet.google.com/apj-tjnt-cwd).
Online Registration Information
Online student registration for the 2022-23 school year is now open. If you have not already started this process for your student(s), please visit our registration page to start this process.
Registration is the first step in getting ready for the upcoming school year. After you register your child online you need to:
Pay student fees. Our student fee webpage outlines the District’s student fee structure and the three ways fees can be paid.
If you have a student that is starting Kindergarten, entering fourth grade, or entering 7th grade, you are required to prove residency in District 15. Our residency webpage outlines the documents you will need to provide to prove residency.
All three steps of the enrollment process must be completed prior to the start of the school year. Students of families that, when required, do not prove residency, will not be able to attend class in a District 15 until the family’s residency is verified.
