From the Teacher's Pen
I really missed being with the 3rd graders on Monday. My visit to St. Mark's in Shoreline was a good experience though. I marveled at how creatively the school used their limited space. I had great empathy for the teachers because they needed to wear so many hats in order to offer a variety of learning opportunities. My visit made me appreciate the many blessings I have here at St. Michael School.
Wet and Cold!
As the weather gets colder, students will need to put on more layers. The layers, however should still follow the uniform policy. Leggings, turtleneck shirts, and boots worn inside are not part of the uniform. A recommendation is for girls to wear white or navy leotards instead of leggings. Students can change into boots for recess. Also, a collar-less shirt under the uniform shirt would help ward off the cold for both boys and girls. In the classroom, students may wear uniform sweater vests, uniform sweaters, or uniform sweatshirts as an extra layer.
Safety Lessons; what we learned
- Safe - do not physically hurt you (hug, high-five).
- Unsafe - can physically hurt you (slap).
- Unwanted - you do not want to be touched. These can be both appropriate and inappropriate, and safe or unsafe touches that you say "NO" to.
- but your whole body is your private property.
- You decide if you want to be touched or not.
If someone makes you uncomfortable...
- say words that mean "NO!"
- get away from that person
- tell a trusted adult.
More Safety Lessons
- Walk facing traffic, wear light colors, travel with friends, carry a flashlight as it gets darker.
- Fire safety: don't play with matches or charcoal lighter fluid, have a fire safety plan for your home - map out exits from your home and have a meeting place outside your home (like a neighbor's house).
- Gun, needle, knife safety: don't ever touch. Get a supervisor to take care of these things when you find them.
- Personal safety: have supervision or be with a group of friends on the playground, don't go with someone if they do not know your "code word or words." A code word is a secret that only you and your child know. It can be as simple as "pickle" or "umbrella."
