District Update on COVID-19 Preparedness
The health and safety of our students, staff and families remains our top priority. We are fully aware of coronavirus concerns. SASD schools will be closed Thursday, March 19th as per the Gov. Evers declaration. Please see link below. Because the situation is constantly evolving, please know that when significant developments occur, we will email you.
Reminder to 6-12 Students
- As good practice, 6-12 students should continue to bring home their Chromebooks and school materials. This practice allows us to be flexible should any developments occur.
To Elementary Families
- As a district, we are working through how we can support elementary students through potential virtual learning, if needed. If this is needed, additional communications will be sent to families via email.
We know that you will have a lot of questions because of this ever-changing situation. We plan to keep you informed the best we can. Please continue to monitor your email.
Message from Dr. Onsager - Sent out March 13th
AS OF FRIDAY AT 4:58 P.M. -- Families, as we pressed "send" on our previous communication just minutes ago (below), we got word that Gov. Tony Evers has mandated all Wisconsin schools to close starting on Wednesday, March 18. More information from SASD will follow as we update our plans accordingly. Please know that the information below is no longer 100% up-to-date.
Information below this line is current as of Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Dear SASD families:
The health and safety of our students, staff and families is our top priority. We would like to update you on our continued focus on COVID-19 in our community. We continue to be in contact with Public Health Madison & Dane County (PHMDC), and we are adjusting our plans accordingly.
At this time, PHMDC is encouraging us to keep our schools open as long as possible based on the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In the event we need to close schools, we are creating plans for virtual learning. We will collaborate with staff and families who are in need of wireless connectivity and devices.
Please read below for our district’s updates. You can also check out our district website’s Health Services page.
District-sponsored out-of-state travel through April 31 (through April 31)
While public health officials are still indicating that the risk to our area remains relatively low, we recognize that there are hotspots of activity throughout the country and world. The spread of COVID-19 is constantly evolving. Therefore, as a preventative measure, we are suspending district-sponsored out-of-state travel for all students and staff from now through April 31, 2020. This includes field trips, performances, competitions, meetings, conferences, or any other events outside the state of Wisconsin. In the coming weeks, we will reassess summer travel.
District-sponsored in-state field trips and mass gatherings (through March 20)
All district in-state field trips and all district mass gatherings -- such as assemblies, concerts, banquets and sports practices -- are cancelled from now through March 20, 2020.
Field trips and after school activities
All field trips and after school activities are cancelled next week. We will keep you updated as we have more information.
Personal spring break travel
We know that many families might be traveling during our upcoming spring break. Guidance from local, state, and federal health departments continues to evolve and change as new cases are diagnosed around the country. At this time, Public Health Madison and Dane County is recommending that people postpone or cancel nonessential travel to areas with COVID-19. This includes both international travel and domestic travel to places with widespread illness. This information is updated by the CDC regularly. It is everyone’s responsibility to use common sense and exercise good judgement about travel. Please know that the district cannot make travel decisions for families.
If you travel to these areas, Public Health recommends a 14-day self-quarantine upon your return. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has more information about how to self-quarantine.
Protocol for individuals with symptoms
If you are experiencing symptoms, please call your primary care provider immediately. Families without primary care providers are instructed to call the UW Health coronavirus hotline at 608-720-5300.
Possible school closure and virtual learning
In the event that there is a school closure, we are putting plans in place for continuing our students’ learning online. We are mindful of the need to provide remote internet access and computers to students who do not have this technology at home. Additional information on details of this plan will be shared as needed. Middle and high school students should continue to bring home their Chromebooks and materials nightly.
Possible school closure and meal planning
In the event of a school closure, we will also provide meals to students.
Cleaning and disinfecting
Buildings and grounds staff are working hard to ensure that all school spaces are cleaned and disinfected on a routine basis.
Family preparedness
As we maintain our readiness, we encourage families to do the same. Some things you may need to consider in the event SASD closes schools:
Childcare arrangements
Retrieving prescription medicines from school that your child may need
Reminder your child in grades 6-12 to bring assigned devices (Chromebook) home every night
Prepare potential activities for your child while they are at home
We understand that if schools remain open you may have concerns about your child’s health and may not want to send them to school. We support you in making the decision that is best for your child. This would be considered an excused absence, and schools will follow the same procedures for make-up work as for any other absence.
Prevention
The best way to keep everyone healthy is to follow the CDC guidelines to help prevent respiratory viruses:
Teachers will be building time into their classroom routines for more frequent hand washing.
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water; Help your child wash their hands well
Keep your child home when they are sick; Stay home when you are sick
Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing and provide reminders to your child
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth and remind your child to do the same, and
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
The COVID-19 situation changes virtually every day. Follow Public Health Madison & Dane County on Facebook and Twitter to see the latest local updates. For the most up-to-date information, also visit the CDC's coronavirus webpage. You can also check our district website’s Health Services page.
Thank you for your understanding and support. We will update you with significant changes. This is a challenging time, and I thank you for your partnership in working through this with us.
Sincerely,
Tim Onsager, District Administrator
