the PENN NEWSLETTER
7/8/19
Happy Summer
This newsletter contains some basic info that will hopefully answer a lot of questions, but do feel free to call or email me with any questions. (heffner.kristy@iowacityschools.org or 319-688-1150). I am in and out of the office over the summer, so be sure to leave a message and I'll get back to you.
~ Mrs. Heffner
ps. please note the change in arrival time for most students: 7:45. See below for more details.
New Student Registration
The Penn Office will be open from 8am - 6 pm on August 5th.
The process will probably take about 30 minutes.
Children do not need to attend.
New Student Registration is specifically for people new to the district or new to Penn.
However, if you are new to Penn due to boundary changes (from Lincoln and Wickham) you do not need to attend.
Parents with kindergartners do not need to attend IF you registered in the spring.
Do you know someone (with children) new to the area? We need to know. Encourage them to call Penn. They may have to leave a message, but Mrs. Heffner will call them back.
PowerSchool and E-Registration Update
Please be watching for notification about updating your e-registration in PowerSchool. This usually happens about the third week of July. When you get the notice, please do the update right away. Our district uses this information to determine staffing at each building, so it is critical to get this done as soon as possible.
E-registration guides can be found on our district site here.
A few things to note:
- E-registration must be completed each year for each student
- You must use the Powerschool website. e-registration is not available on the mobile app.
- You can use the link on our homepage or click here.
- If you need help remembering your parent username please call Penn's secretary, Becky Recker, at 319-688-1150 (you may leave a message) or email recker.becky@iowacityschools.org
- Remember, e-registration is not complete until you see the green check mark by each student's name on the final page :)
**** Please note, that after you update your e-registration in PowerSchool, you may see your student assigned to a teacher. This is our preliminary plan, but is subject to change. Please plan to attend the Ice Cream Social to confirm your child's classroom assignment.
School Times AND Arrival/Dismissal
Elementary school hours are 7:55am-2:55pm, with each Thursday dismissing an hour early at 1:55pm.
Additionally, the first day of school will be early dismissal at 1:55pm.
Arrival
At 7:45, all students may enter the building and go to their classrooms. Students not eating breakfast should not arrive until 7:45 as there will be no supervision available. Breakfast will begin at 7:30. Students should use the south doors to enter for breakfast.
School begins at 7:55. (A student is late if he/she is not in his/her classroom by 7:55)
Parents may walk their children into their classrooms on the first 4 days of school. Beginning on Thursday, August 29 students will enter independently. We will have 6th grade ambassadors at the front doors to help younger students find their way.
Parents, you may always walk your child in to the building, but you'll need to park your car and come to the office to register as a visitor before taking your child to the classroom.
Dismissal
We will have 2 after school car lines.
The car line in front of the building is for kindergartners, first graders and their siblings.
All students in grades 3 - 6, may be picked up in the north carline (between the school and the park).
There will be more information about our car line in August, but for planning purposes we want to share that the earliest children may arrive is 7:45 am (unless they are eating breakfast). Also, students should have an after school plan for where they go or to be picked up immediately after dismissal.
BUS LANE: the south parking lot is reserved for our buses and day care vans. Please do not use this lot.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
