Industry Update

SIS on hold

On June 1, 2016, Minister of Human Services Irfan Sabir committed to reviewing the Supports Intensity Scale (SIS) and bringing in a policy that is respectful in gauging the supports that people with developmental disabilities need. Identifying an alternative approach to planning supports for individuals in a fair, transparent and consistent manner will include exploring best practices, careful planning, and taking the necessary time to get it right.


ACDS - CET policy templates

ACDS members have started a project to create sample policy and form templates for each of the CET indicators. ACDS is also reaching out to members in hopes they will provide sample policies they are currently using. More news to come as this project has just started.

Partnerships in Injury Reduction (PIR)

Independent Advocacy is scheduled for a Partnerships in Injury Reduction (PIR) audit in October. We are excited to have Bill Bradley back to guide us through the process.


What is PIR and how is it important for employers and employees?

PIR is a voluntary program that operates through the combined efforts of WCB, the Ministry of Labour, industry partners, safety associations, employers and labour groups. PIR encourages injury prevention and the development of effective workplace health, safety and return-to-work plans. It keeps people safe and helps reduce costs associated with work place injuries.

IGuardStove - Modernized stove security

iGuardStove will shut the power to a stove after a pre-set time, if no movement is detected in the cooking area. A motion sensor is placed on top of the stove and monitors the area for movement. It is quick and simple to install. Independent Advocacy has been testing this product for the last few months and has purchased units for the remain stoves in the agency.
