A note from Ms. Walsh
Happy Friday Mountain View! I hope everyone enjoyed their week and is looking forward to the weekend ahead. Middle School is a pivotal time for growth and development for children, it is also a time of heightened emotion, challenges, conflict, and discomfort. As hard as it may be to witness, challenges and conflict lead to significant personal growth in children and help them to develop emotional toolkits and coping skills for the future. A significant number of conflicts that children face in their Middle School years involve friendship issues. For Middle Schoolers socialization is one of their main concerns- but in reality: “In sixth grade, only a third of friendships endure through the school year” and “by 12th grade, just 1 percent of middle school friendships remain intact.” These statistics come from Paige Tutt, a writer from Edutopia on the topic of student wellness. Paige Tutt wrote an article called “Why Bullying Is Too Narrow a Lens for Addressing Conflict in Middle School.” Check out the article here to read about parental situations and strategies to help your child navigate middle school friendships. In addition to this article, The Rich Roll podcast recently had Dr. Lisa Damour, a Yale-educated Clinical Psychologist, who helps to answer the question: How do we equip teens emotionally with the tools they need to navigate our complex and ever-changing world? Throughout discussing the possible answer to the proposed question, Dr. Damour explores the impact of social media, the pandemic, and how teens respond to disruptions in their world. You can check out this podcast titled: “The Emotional Lives of Teenagers” on Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube, or the Rich Roll website. Have a great weekend :)
