Lincoln Lowdown
Halloween was a Hoot! It was difficult to determine if it was Halloween or closer to our winter celebrations due to the weather. Students enjoyed an indoor parade, along with our pie throwing incentive during lunch. Mr. Navis weathered 54 pies thrown at him from all ages during our lunch hour. He is a great sport! This was an incentive for our Run-a-thon and the students thoroughly enjoyed it. Take a look at Twitter to see some videos and photos of the event.
Thank you to all the parents who planned, supported and contributed to our classroom parties. It looks as though the kids all had wonderful treats and lots of fun!
End of 1st trimester
Today Friday, November 1st is the end of our first trimester. I encourage parents to take some time to reflect with their children about the learning that has happened over these past few months. Framing your conversation using a growth mindset can help students see all of the progress that they’ve made over these past few months. The term "growth mindset" comes from work from Carol Dweck. She defines it as, “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” ( Dweck, 2015). This is in contrast to the belief that we have innate abilities that do not change, often we hear people especially students say, I am not good at math, or I can't write. Everything we do comes from work and practice, sometimes we need to work harder at things but we want our students to know they CAN do it, as long as they try and put the effort in. Some questions to consider are below:
1. Ask your child how he or she has become more independent, how have they grown as a writer, reader, mathematician or a learner? What areas might be a focus for next trimester?
2. What goals can your child set for themselves? What will that look like?
3. In what ways has your child carried out common courtesies and respect? What are some specific examples that he or she can provide? What is one goal to focus on for the second trimester related to this social-emotional area?
It has been so exciting to see all of the learning students have done since August. As educators, we are constantly collecting evidence of this learning in order to respond to students’ needs. We, too, will be reflecting on these past few months and setting goals for ourselves as learners and as teachers.
