Canby High School Family Newsletter
For the Week of Sept 16th to Sept 22nd, 2021
Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families!
As mentioned in previous newsletters, our school year is off to a positive start, and that energy was apparent at last week’s football game against West Albany High School. Our students packed the standards and the energy was high. Fox 12 (KPTV) was here to cover the event and our students enthusiastically demonstrated their spirit (and proper mask wearing!...thank you!) Although it ended in a narrow defeat, our Cougars played hard and provided an exciting contest. Thank you to the players and students for making this a great way to start our football season and school year.
On Saturday, our nation remembered September 11th. As part of our remembrances, CHS students participated in the production of a film, in coordination with Canby Currents director Tyler Francke, to document the impacts on our community. It debuted last Friday and was featured in a KGW 8 news story. If you are interested, you can view the story here and the entire film at this website.
There are many new improvements to our campus as we start the year. In the ATC, we’ve opened a “Makerspace,” a lab to provide our students with industry level tools and machines to help extend learning and apply their skills. Students have access to laser printers, CNC routers, vinyl printers, and other tools. See a more detailed description below.
In our sports facilities, we are currently adding turf to our softball and baseball fields, as well as adding another multi-use field. We have resurfaced our old gym and upgraded the bleachers in the main gym. Check out the pictures.
Finally, I think our community is experiencing increased sensitivity as a result of dealing with COVID, and this has encouraged a lot of speculation and rumors. We want to be as transparent as possible. If you have any questions about information circulating in the community about the high school, please call our main line (503.263.7200) or email us.
Have a great week and Go Cougars!

Academics
CHS Makerspace: This year the Applied Technology Center’s Makerspace is being utilized by students, staff and community to not only prepare our students for careers in industry but also contribute to the Canby community. Already the Makerspace has been used to create advertising banners for community sponsors, projects in class, hands on learning in both the CTE and Science department. Students in the Principals of Engineering class have used 3-D software to create and print usable mask hooks (ear protectors) so they can be worn more comfortably by students and staff. Currently our Business department teachers are collaborating to bring custom water bottles, apparel advertising materials and various other products all being created on site at Canby High school. The Graphic Design classes are creating plaque templates to then be laser engraved for sports and competitions. Eccles and Ninety-one have also benefited from our Makerspace technology and equipment. They have both received equipment to be used at the lower grade levels to help facilitate the newest technology in their lessons. See the attached pictures.
iPads: iPads have been reissued to all students. If you are having issues, please visit our tech support desk in the library during school hours or email our techs: Elie Enderle (elie.enderle@canby.k12.or.us) or Josh Rapley (joshua.rapley@canby.k12.or.us.)
PSAT Testing will be at CHS on Saturday, Oct. 16th for juniors. More information will be sent out on 9/20/21 from the Counseling Office.
Counselors will be scheduling one-on-one senior meetings 1st trimester. Topics will include: college and other applications, financial aid, scholarships, credit checks, and general check in for the year.
Activities and Arts
Welcome Back Movie Night: Organized by our leadership students, we have a movie night on Sept 17th, from 8-10pm in the CHS stadium.
Club Fair: Every year our clubs host a fair for students to get information and sign up for after school clubs and activities. Come see what’s going on, during lunches Sept 20th-22nd.
- Senior Pictures are due November 29, 2021.
Athletics
Athletics games are off and running. Please check the master schedule linked here for all the current game times and locations. If you think one of our teams had great performances, nominate them for OSAA team of the week! The link is here.
A reminder that masks are required indoors for everyone who is not in active competition or practice. For outdoor athletics, masks are required for everyone who cannot maintain 6ft of social distance. Those who are competing or practicing outdoors may also choose to remove their masks.
This year, we have again purchased a license to broadcast all our home games on the NFHS Network for free! Away games may still require a subscription to the NFHS Network. Please go to NFHSNetwork.com and create a free account to watch all our games in the stadium and main gym.
