Waipawa School

Term 1, Week 9 -30th March 2022

Kia ora koutou

The Whanau and Friends Easter Raffle is coming up soon. A huge thanks to everyone who is selling and buying tickets. The Easter Raffle is really important as Whanau and Friends always give a donation to support Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) activities. While EOTC has not happened this term due to COVID we know that the team will make up for it as the year progresses. It's been many years since we charged families for a school trip and this raffle is a big reason why.

Yvette our new Sports Coordinator is doing a wonderful job and working hard on getting Term 2 sports set up. It has been difficult with so many children away. Children need to sign up for Term 2 sport now. If children come back from the holidays wanting to play a sport they will miss out - teams will be organised. It's really important everyone has access to HERO as information is posted on here on a regular basis.

COVID - Update

Rule changes don't mean too much change for us as we near the end of Term 1. The vaccination mandate is still in place until the 4th April.

On the Covid front, our focus just remains on trying to keep the school operating as close to 'normal' as possible.

We had huge numbers absent at the back end of last week however this week we are seeing a lot of faces we haven't seen for a while. Yesterday we had 89 absent. This is still a lot but it is on the decline and we are hoping this trend continues.

Staff numbers affected so far by Covid continue to be on the low side and we have been able to cover most days with our wonderful release teachers Chelsea Andrews and Lou White. Our Learning Support Coordinator Tracey Lancaster has also helped us by spending a number of days in Room 8.

School Uniform

Our uniform order has arrived so we have plenty of stock available. However, our supplier can no longer supply our polo shirts so we have been forced to change. We have gone with the one as pictured. The price remains the same at $25.00. A reminder that we do not supply the bottoms, you can purchase these from any clothing store as long as they are Navy Blue and no labels please.

Thumbs Up

Thumbs up to past students Gabby Drake who came 2nd in the Junior Girls Individual Inter house Triathlon, Alice Thompson 2nd in the Senior Girls, Kalani Jones 1st in the Senior Boys House Team and Logan Hellberg 1st Senior Mixed Team. Well done to you all.

Whanau & Friends Easter Raffle

Tickets are now on sale for our annual Easter Raffle. Tickets have been distributed to the eldest child in each family. If you haven't received your sheet of tickets there is some available in the school office.

We have 21 buckets of eggs, 2 bikes and 2 large Kinder Surprise eggs. One for a junior student and one for a senior student.

Tickets and money need to be returned to school by Monday 11th April please. Raffle will be drawn on Wednesday 13th April.

Year 7 & 8 Technology Fees

Parents and Caregivers of Year 7 & 8 students have received an account for $15.00 for Term 1 Technology Fees. These fees are to cover the cost of the materials that your children use at the Centre. These fees need to be paid by the end of Term please.

STARTING SCHOOL : 4 Year Old Mornings

- These take place in Kākano Class - the Hall from 8:40am until 12:00pm every Friday morning unless there has been prior notification. Please come to the office first and meet Sue England.

- We find 4 visits before starting school is usually sufficient. However, if your child requires more we would be in close communication with you.

- Whanau are welcome to stay for the first visit and leave when the child / parent feels comfortable. Subsequent visits we ask that parents be brave and leave so that the child experiences what school is like.

- Please pack a snack for brainfood (fruit, sandwich, muesli bar) and something for morning tea.

- Children can wear mufti clothing or school uniform if they have it available.

Please don't hesitate to pop in and see us if you have any questions or concerns.

Jess Stewart and Karena Finch
