Taking Care of Each Other
Like any complex group of individuals, the Pine Class has put around some negativity of late. This week we focused on empowering children to speak up for what's right - taking care of each other, and taking care of the community.
These norms about caring have always been central to our class' mission and purpose. However, up until this point we've only talked about them in a positive way. This week we talked about the opposite of care - hurt. As adults, we realize it may sound melodramatic in some contexts to say someone "hurt" the class. However, it is the most concrete way we have thought of for children to understand what it means to not "care." As the children grow older we will use more nuanced language.
We brainstormed ways that children could speak up to a peer or to the group if they feel someone is hurting our community.
We are sensitive to everyone's feelings. This includes the feelings of the person who is "hurting" the community. We don't want that person to feel singled out. And if their own feeling of hurt is at the bottom of their hurtful actions, we want to help them work that out. Conversations about this kind of back and forth are the next step in our plan for empowering children to take care of our class' mission and purpose.
