The Dynamic Tension of Bilingual/Dual Language
I know some have had the opportunity to attend the ESSA/Multilingual Conference. One great session shared via a recorded session reflects on many of the things that we experience in every meeting with colleagues.
The first 2:35 minutes of this session shares ideas that are in this dynamic tension.
What can we do to ensure that we are reflecting both sides of the tension and honoring all aspects of who our students are?
Family Packs for experiential learning
No, We're Not Done RAVING about TalkingPoints Yet!
Your Multilingual Team is happy to share this video walkthrough of what TalkingPoints, this fantastic multilingual texting app offers and how to use it! Skip directly to 9:46 if you're ready for the logistical set up - creating a class, add contacts, etc. With the end of the trimester and conferences upon us, now is the perfect time to jump on the app and text a family you haven't been able to reach by email or phone call! Watch here and then quick log in here!
Here's what Ellen Rasof, EL teacher @ Attea, had to say in an email to AT_STAFF...
"I know we all have a lot on our plates and you might think this is another thing, but let me tell you, IT IS AWESOME!!! [TalkingPoints] allows you to be in touch with our multilingual families in no time!! It is super easy to set up and use!! You can just use your computer if you do not want it on your phone.
Here is the helpful tutorial from our wonderful coaches if you would like to use that as well. I set it up and have been talking with my Korean speaking families as well as my Spanish speakers. It is super fast and gave me the confidence to reach out to them without needing a translator.
Honestly, super easy and you will love it!"
Teacher's Spotlight
Michele Fecarotta
Michele Fecarotta, EL teacher at Glen Grove, was nominated by a colleague to be in the spotlight!!! She has been working intensively to ensure a new student of hers with minimal English can communicate with others. Tools such as the Talking Points app have also allowed her and the classroom teacher to better communicate with the family.
Check out one of the tools (below) she shared with her colleagues she coteaches with to support her Newcomer students.
