FEDERAL CARDS
Monday, October 16, 2017 the federal cards should be sent home with your students. Please stress to your students how important this information is to us. Also, notify your parents that the card has been sent home! Let them know that instructions for the cards are on the back this year!
The cards will be in your mailboxes Monday morning, along with a letter explaining the survey and its benefits. If a student is absent Monday, please send the card home when they return to school. If you have a student who is out for an extended period, please let Kelley know. If a student loses a card, we can give them another one.
Please keep the cards until you have them ALL.
We will also be sending an ALERT NOW message informing parents of the survey and asking them to return the card as soon as possible – Friday, October 20th being the deadline.
Why are these cards so important? The annual Federal Card survey is here! This survey generates approximately $12 million dollars for the school division. The money is used to benefit every student attending VBCPS.
The information provided on the card, by the parent, is NOT SHARED. It is totally confidential. The card is also new and improved and is a full page.
Thank you so much for your help. Please let Kelley know if you have questions.
Responsive Classrooms - The Power of Our Words
As an education professional, I have attended many inservice trainings talking about how to effectively give feedback and praise to students. I have also observed in the classrooms of many teachers with great behavior management skills and a knack for progressing students who often gave positive praise beginning with a variation of the sentence stem, “I like that (you)”.
- Steve, I think it is great you…
- I loved how the class….
- I like how Tre’Mar is…
When starting with a variation of, “I like…” I was making the student’s success about me and their dependence of feeling successful or unsuccessful based on my approval or disapproval. As a result, I realized my language wasn’t in line with supporting moving students towards a place of self-regulation and intrinsic satisfaction (I wanted to students to do well because it made them feel good and it was important to them). In other words, I realized this doesn't support our school wide vision of "learners taking ownership for their learning." Starting a year ago, I made the personal goal, to change the language that I use with students. Try it on for size!
Instead of saying “I like”, try using…
- Hooray for you, you did it! You….. (be specific about what they did so that they know to do it again).
- You must be really proud….You...
- I noticed that you….(may add to the end, you must be proud or you must feel happy)
- I see you…
- You must feel happy (or good)…

what will your children change today?
Why should you participate? The DFC Program offers you a structured way to teach the 21st century skills like leadership, communication, collaboration and creative thinking. The program also enhances confidence and self-belief among children. Students move from a mindset of ‘CAN I?’ to ‘I CAN!’ Research proves that this confidence can help improve their academic score by up to 28%.
