Fall Battle of the Books

4th and 5th graders are currently signing up for Battle of the Books. The date has not been finalized, but it won't be till the end of November or beginning of December. If you are not familiar with Battle of the Books, students sign up as a team made up of 4 or 5 students. As a team they read the ten Bluestem titles that are being used for Battle, so each team member reads 2-3 of the books. On Battle day, teams meet in the library and are given a whiteboard to write down answers to questions about the books they read. "In which book is do two brothers go on a rafting trip together?" If a team can correctly write down the title (Wild River) on their white board, the team earns a point. If they also correctly know the author (P. J. Petersen), they get a second point.

In the spring Oak Ridge had 104 4th and 5th graders participate in Battle! It was fantastic and I am sure this Battle won't disappoint either. Listed below are the Bluestem titles being used for Battle. They are in hot demand in the library, so if you have any of these available in your classroom libraries, please support your Battlers by letting them know what titles you have.

Bluestem titles being used for FALL BATTLE 2014

Dogs on Duty by Dorothy Hinshaw Patent

Drita, My Homegirl by Jenny Lombard

Frindle by Andrew Clements

Niagara Falls, or Does it? by Henry Winkler

The Stone Keeper: Book 1 of the Amulet Series by Kazu Kibuishi

The Truth about Poop by Susan E. Goodman and Elwood H. Smith

Wild River by R.J. Petersen

It's time for that time honored Oak Ridge tradition-decorating a pumpkin like a favorite book character or book cover. Forms will go home at the beginning of October for students to sign up. Pumpkins will be displayed in the library the week of Halloween.

Harris Collection is back in the library

I am back to making my monthly runs to the Field Museum to borrow items from the Harris Collection. Right now the library is hosting a fox and a squirrel from the Field Museum. The squirrel is neat because on one half you can see inside the squirrel and see how it is preserved! The Harris Collection also has "experience boxes". These kits can really be a great supplement to a lesson (or be a lesson). If you click the link below you can see pictures and descriptions of the boxes. If you see something you like, I would be happy to try and reserve it for you and pick it up when I go. Boxes can be checked out for a month.

92 5th graders asked to volunteer in the library

92 5th graders asked to be library volunteers during recess on Wednesdays! Volunteers "adopt a shelf", dust, wash tables and windows and books; they sharpen pencils and help with miscellaneous jobs that need to be done. Because we had so many students sign up, we have a calendar rotating which classes are volunteering. Mrs. Zydek's class is going first:

5A, Zydek: Weeks of 9/22, 9/29, 10/6, 10/13

5B, Rafferty: Weeks of 10/20, 10/27, 11/3, 11/10, 11/17

5C, Gierach: Weeks of 12/1, 12/8, 12/15, 1/6, 1/12

5D, Dempsey: Weeks of 1/19, 1/26, 2/2, 2/9, 2/16

5E, Vandervelde: Weeks of 2/23, 3/2, 3/9, 3/16, 3/23

5F, Annel: Weeks of 4/13, 4/20, 4/27, 5/4, 5/11
