From the Counselor's Desk
Week of September 22 - 26, 2014
This Week in School Counseling
- This week - through Friday, October 3 - begins our Food 2 Families Food Drive! Sponsored by News Channel 2 and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee, our goal this year is to bring in over 2,000 cans of food for our neighbors throughout Middle Tennessee who are fighting hunger. Please encourage our students to first seek permission then donate canned food items like peanut butter, canned fruit, canned meats, canned or dried beans, boxed or bagged rice, canned vegetables, and macaroni and cheese. In your mailbox will be a classroom tally sheet for you to keep track of the donated canned food items. Remember, the classroom that collects the most food items wins a pizza party! To help you think through and understand the breadth of of hunger, watch Feeding America: Hunger in America 2014. Hunger looks much different than we think.
- MNPS hosts its 2nd Annual College Awareness Week. Counselors across the district are coordinating activities with their faculties and students to develop the skills and aspirations in all our students. Throughout the year, teachers and counselors will be creating early awareness, knowledge and skills that lay the foundation for the academic rigor and social development necessary for college and career readiness. In celebration of College Awareness Week at REL, we will wear our college paraphernalia on Friday, September 26. (Go Big Blue!)
- In preparation for the Kids on the Block visit on Monday, September 29 (during Related Arts), 3rd and 4th grade students have been asked to complete pre-tests for their presentations. Please let me know the day (Wednesday or Thursday) and time I can come conduct the pre-test.
- Don't forget to let me know (via the schedule provided) your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice for classroom guidance.
- Reviews of Support Team folders and Intervention Plans continue, as does Aimsweb testing. But even though those things are happening, I am never too busy to still be available for you or our students. You and they are a key priority!
