Kindergarten Class News
January 26-February 9, 2018
It has been a couple of weeks since a newsletter was sent out! Here is what we have been up to in Kindergarten:
"Hooray for the 100th Day!"
On Friday, January 26th, we spent our 100th day of Kindergarten doing stations around our classroom. Here are some photos of how we spent our 100th at school!
Maysyn and Kam are building with 100 Legos.
Vander and Dezmond used BINGO daubers to paint 100 gum balls.
Gracie and Tianna used 100 beads to make a necklace.
Emma and Rachel put numbers 1-100 in numerical order as they played a SmartBoard game.
Aaliyah, Kenzie, and Adrian are coloring in tens and ones to keep track of 100 licks of their suckers.
Trenton and Aidan had so much fun building with toothpicks and 100 marshmallows (after taste testing a few, of course)!
Reading
We have added letters Dd and Ee to our handwriting over the last couple of weeks and we can now read words do, my, and are! Please continue to practice reading and writing sight words at home.
We have dove deep into words over the last couple of weeks and are practicing breaking apart the sounds and deciphering how many sounds we hear in various words. The students enjoyed learning about adding -ed to words as I would give them a command such as "hop" and then we would discuss what they just did (they "hopped"); we add -ed to the end of words when they already happened! Continue to practice rhyming and counting syllables at home and read for Book It!
Math
Kindergarteners always enjoy our unit on graphing! We learned how to write tallies, fill in a tally chart, and then use a tally chart to fill in various kinds of graphs such as picture graphs, pictographs, and bar graphs. They also surveyed their classmates to collect data on what amusement park ride was the favorite; roller coaster or ferris wheel. They crated a tally chart with their data which they then turned in to a real graph using color cubes and a bar graph. Towards the end of this week, we will begin to discuss symmetry/equal parts.
Social Studies/Science
We completed our Social Studies Unit entitled "Where We Live" where we discussed landforms, globes, maps, and communities. We are now going to move on to an Earth Science Unit all about what Earth's surface is made of, landforms, bodies of water, etc.
