Misconceptions About Gifted Student

Common Stereotypes Around Gifted Students

Stereotypes are Dangerous and Misleading

Gifted students are often portrayed as weak, scrawny and strange kids. But this is a misconception as gifted students are no different physically than their peers. Furthermore, studies have shown gifted students to be very stable children and teachers will often overlook their gifts because they come across as being "normal".

Teaching strategies to help them reach full potential

  • As with all students, identifying the strengths and needs of the learner is imperative
  • Enthusiasm and creativity towards what is being taught and learned
  • Programming rich independent tasks that require inquiry based discovery
  • Differentiation of teaching methods
  • May require explicit teaching of social skills
  • Extra time
  • Increase in expectations
