The PTC is sponsoring Family Fun Night on Friday, February 7th from 6:00-7:30 pm in the school gym. Mrs. Ravida will be calling Bingo and the PTC will provide pizza and drinks.
Valentine's Day is Thursday, February 14th, and our Annual Pancake Breakfast will take place from 7:15 - 7:50 am in the school gym. All families are invited to attend. Classroom parties will take place in the afternoon. We ask all Room Parents to check into the office at 1:40 pm and then report to your designated classrooms. The PTC is providing a craft and snack.
The next PTC meeting is on April 1st at 6:30 pm in the Idea Lab. Most of our wonderful PTC members are going to be leaving at the end of this school year so now is a great time to get involved! If you are interested in participating on the board next year, please reach out to gatesmillspto@gmail.com
It's Cold Weather Time Again!
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately to participate in outdoor recess (i.e., coat, hat, gloves, boots, snow pants, etc.). As stated in the handbook: All students are expected to go outside unless the temperature is below 20 degrees or the wind chill is below 10 degrees. Generally, if a child is able to ride the bus and attend school, (s)he should also be able to go outside at recess. The only exceptions are: a physician’s request, a written parent request for the day the child returns to school following an illness, or a request by the teacher or Principal. We have a limited amount of clothing for students to change into should they get wet or muddy outside, so please consider sending in an extra set of clothing for your children.
Inside the Idea Lab
On January 21 in Idea Lab we celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as well as the upcoming National Puzzle Day, which is January 29. Grades 3 through 5 listened to the book Martin and Anne: The Kindred Spirits of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Anne Frank. This picture book, published just last year, highlights the parallels between the lives of these two inspirational figures using succinct prose and bold illustrations. After hearing our story of the day, we celebrated National Puzzle Day by doing a wide assortment of jigsaw puzzles together. Of course, we checked out books and many students made selections on the topics of Martin Luther King, Jr., Chinese New Year, and the mystery genre.
Grades K through 2 heard the 1962 book The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, and we learned that the New York Public Library, which celebrates its 125th birthday this month, has recently announced that The Snowy Day is the most circulated book in its 125 year history! We discussed how it’s good to read the same story from time to time, as it helps us notice and remember details we hadn’t retained from before. After hearing about Peter’s adventures in the snow, we also did jigsaw puzzles, which is a great indoor activity for snowy days!
March Book Madness is just around the corner so next week we will continue reading the candidates for that award this year. Please note that we have library both Monday, January 27 and Friday, January 31. Please help your students remember to turn their books in each time so that they may earn stamps toward library prizes. Lost book notices are now going home via email as well as paper. Please contact me, Mrs. Stephens, about any library book issues. You can email me directly at pstephens@mayfieldschools.org. Thanks for your support and don’t forget to keep reading with and to your children, even if they can read to themselves.
