The WAVA Wave

June 1, 2016

A Message from our Principal...

Dear WAVA Parents & Students –

I would like to thank you all for a fantastic school year! As I finish up this 10th year at WAVA and reflect back on where we started in 2006 compared to where we are now in 2016, I am blown away by the amazing school we have all created together. This has been a year of growth and development, not only for our students but for our program as well. As you know, we have exciting improvements in our future as K12 updates our curriculum and our online platform to better support our students and their continued learning. I very much hope that you are planning to return in the fall and continue on this journey with us!

I also want to invite you to join us at our year end celebrations this spring! On June 14th, we will be having our online 8th grade graduation ceremony and everyone is invited to come celebrate and send off our 8th graders. On June 15th, we will be enjoying our Middle School Talent Show online. For both of these events, please watch for links in your Class Connect schedule to attend. On June 16th, we will have our Face-to-face 8th grade graduation in Tacoma for those who wish to attend. You can see more details and RSVP towards the bottom of this newsletter!

Once again, thank you all for your hard work, dedication, and continued involvement in make WAVA such a great school!

Happy Summer!

The Counselor Connect

In the May edition of the WAVA Wave newsletter, I wrote a short piece about the College Bound Scholarship. In case you missed the newsletter, the College Bound Scholarship is an incredible opportunity for students who meet certain requirements to have the bulk of their college education paid for, but the application must be completed by June 30th of the student’s 8th grade year.

If a student is in 7th or 8th grade and meets any ONE of the following criteria, they may be eligible for the College Bound Scholarship:
• Eligible to receive free- and reduced-price lunch or receive basic food/TANF benefits
• Are a foster youth or dependent of the state
• Family’s income falls within the following guidelines:

PLEASE NOTE: The income chart included here is a correction from the chart I sent out in the May WAVA Wave Newsletter. The chart included here is accurate; the one from the previous newsletter was not. My apologies for the confusion.

I will be hosting a short informational session on the College Bound Scholarship in Class Connect on Thursday, June 2 at 3:00 to explain the scholarship in more detail and to answer questions.

Class Connect Link

The session will be recorded and made available to anyone who was not able to attend live. I have also kmailed the PowerPoint presentation I will be using during the session as well as a FAQ for middle school parents to all 7th and 8th grade students and learning coaches.

The College Bound Scholarship application and additional information can be found at

http://www.readysetgrad.org/college/college-bound-scholarship-program

Please feel free to kmail me if you have any questions. I hope to see you at the info session on June 2nd.

Using Texting/SMS for Communication

Good news for the 2016-17 school year, WAVA will be communicating with families via text messaging! We want to be sure you are receiving the most current school communications. Please be sure to check that your primary phone number is up-to-date in the OLS. Starting in August, we will begin sending 1-2 text communications per month to our enrollment approved families. If you do not wish to be contact via text, you will need to reply with STOP when you receive our first text message – this will permanently opt you out. If you change your mind and would like to begin receiving text message, you can contact Denise Roberts at info@wava.org to reverse the decision.
