ART - Mr. H. is Back!
We're starting off our art journey using "Windows" as our theme. We're looking at the Caldecott-award winning story, The Hello, Goodbye Window by Norman Juster for our first artwork's inspiration in grades K-2. Our grade 3-5 artists will learn about the work of Surrealist painter Rene Magritte and create a fantastic scene using his painting The Human Condition to spark our imagination. Each artwork is designed to review our concepts and vocabulary and to get us to think like artists. Overlapping, foreground/background and craftsmanship are but a few of the concepts that our young artists will work towards demonstrating in these first units of study for Q. 2.
Remember, you don't have to be a great artist to be successful in class; you just have to be willing to try and to see the world through your artist's eyes!!!
Physical Education News - Mrs. Burgess
It's probably hard to believe but Physical Education in the virtual world has been full of ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT! Students have applied the concepts of teamwork and sportsmanship while they practice skills and concepts related to personal fitness and loco-motor skills.
We have embarked on a virtual trip to 11 National Parks! K-2 practiced and performed loco-motor skills at each location on the adventure, while 3-5 gained understanding of the 4 components that encompass personal fitness when their adventure took them on an AMRAP (As Many Reps As Possible) Team Fitness challenge Hopefully they not only had fun but have a new interest in visiting places that this wonderful country has to offer!
In addition you might be surprised to realize that things are actually pretty "Normal" and we started out strong moving ACTIVELY TOGETHER with other things as well like: "This or That" fitness, & "Rock, Paper, Scissors" PE challenge fitness.
The movement is just getting started as Grades 3-5 will continue to solidify and apply their understanding of Personal Fitness when we complete our "DUMBBELL Fitness challenge" and our second virtual adventure with the "wonders of the world". K-2 will continue to demonstrate loco-motor skills, pathways, and levels during our interactive Fire Safety Activities! So, there's much more to come in the world of PE but in the meantime students can always re-visit the fun by accessing all live sessions via my LIVE CAST folder in Schoology!
Media News - Mrs. Byard
During the first quarter in media, we are learning about the many different resources that are available on the media center homepage. There are great databases that contain information on a variety of topics, and ebook resources for the students. Remember, if you ever need login information for any of the resources, there is a link to a document that contains usernames and passwords for our resources, at the top of the grid on the media center homepage.
We are also reading great books! Many of the read alouds are available in the lesson slideshows, so students may listen to them again, by accessing the slideshow in their Schoology course.
Book Exchange during Distance Learning has started. The information has been published in Find-Out-First, the Tiger Times Newsletter and is also available in the black “Book Exchange” folder in the Library Media course in Schoology. The information is also included below. We would love to see students participate and increase their access to books! See the information below about parent permission and how to place books on hold.
BOOK EXCHANGE IS BACK!!!
It may be a virtual learning world, but Mrs. Byard can’t wait to get physical books back in the hands of students!
How will Book Exchange work?
Students will use the LES Library Media Center catalog to place books on hold. Then, following the Book Exchange Schedule, families will pick up their bagged/bundled books from the light blue, outside media center door.
How does our family get started?
Step 1: Read the LES Book Exchange Guidelines and Pickup Schedule for details.
Step 2: Complete this quick Parent Permission for Distance Learning Book Exchange Form.
Step 3: Your child may begin placing books on hold!
Watch the How-To Video to learn how to search for books, and place books on hold, or follow these written instructions. Students will also receive guided instruction on searching for books and placing holds during a library lesson.
Media Schedule Change
Media will now be on a rotating Week A/Week B Schedule.
During Week A, students will attend their Google Meet with Mrs. Byard for their synchronous library lesson.
During Week B, students will access asynchronous library lesson activities in Schoology, during their regularly scheduled media time. Everything the students need for their asynchronous lessons will be in the orange folder in Schoology.
Please contact Dana Byard through Schoology, or by email at dana.byard@fcps.org with any questions.
Pickup times on those designated Wednesdays are 9-11:30am and 1-4pm
Book Exchange will happen on B weeks only. Students/families will be putting books on hold/reserving books for pickup. The deadline will be 10AM on Monday. I will fill those orders, and families will pick up during advertised windows of time on Wednesday. Pickup will be at the outside Media Center door. Students will not be coming in to browse.Music Notes - Mrs. Raynor
Welcome back to music class! We are spending this first quarter getting used to our new virtual classes. While this is my third year at LES and my 23rd year in FCPS, this school year is truly like no other! Thank you for your kindness and patience as we all learn together!
During this quarter, all students have been focused on keeping the steady beat and beginning to read basic rhythms. Kindergarten and first grade are also practicing the various ways we can use our voices. Moving into the second quarter means we will all begin looking at melody- how the notes move higher and lower. This includes singing on pitch & reading notes from the music staff. All classes will also be practicing some holiday songs as well!
As you spend time with your family, I hope you’re able to find some time to sing, dance, or just keep the beat with whatever music is playing at home. It’s always fun to take a break from screentime! Have fun & happy fall!
