TWHS Final Exam Exemption Policy

All students, 9th through 12th, are eligible for final exam exemptions in the Spring Semester. Students must meet the criteria and the discipline requirement listed below. Students must maintain an 85-100 class average for the semester (18-weeks). In addition, the following criteria apply as well:

  1. Students must meet the grade criteria listed above and the requirements listed below.
  2. A student granted a final exam exemption must still attend that class during the final exam period and must be present the entire duration of the final exam period to be considered exempt. Students who check out early during a final exam will forfeit the exemption, receive a grade of zero or incomplete for the exam and will need to schedule a makeup final exam. Failure to attend will result in a zero or an incomplete for that course.
  3. Any student that has served ISS, DAEP, or OSS while enrolled in a course during the semester of the final exam is not eligible for a final exam exemption for that course.
  4. To ensure that all students have the opportunity to complete their exams in a distraction-free environment, the attendance office will not be doing early checkouts during exam periods. Parents and students should plan accordingly so that students remain in their exam period the entire duration of the exam period.

STAAR END OF COURSE (EOC) TESTING

This notice concerns upcoming STAAR EOC tests in the spring of this school year. The state of Texas has determined that in the 2022-2023 school year, all STAAR EOC testing will move to an online platform. We are following the state’s initiative and will begin online testing this spring semester. Due to these changes, our testing procedures have changed. For your planning purposes, please review the following bullet points to understand how your child will be impacted with the transition to online testing.

General directions for testing days on both campuses:

· ONLY testing students will report to school at regular time on the testing days listed below--This is for senior campus only. ALL 9th grade students will report to the 9th grade campus on the testing dates below by 7:20.

· Any student attending the senior campus, regardless of grade level (10th-12th), who is NOT testing will have late arrival.

· All Ninth-grade campus students will report to the ninth-grade campus on the dates below due to testing and altered shuttle schedules during the school day. Please scroll to view more information about the ninth-grade campus testing.

  • May 3 - Algebra 1 EOC (students that have already taken and passed the Algebra 1 EOC will participate in a Biology EOC review),
  • May 4 - Biology EOC.

Specific directions for SENIOR CAMPUS testing days:

· On May 4th: Any student enrolled in US History or who needs to retest US History will report to school at regular time and review posters on the wall to locate their testing room.

· If your student is NOT enrolled in US History and/or does not need to retest, he/she will report to school at approximately 11:00. Exact times and locations will be announced closer to the testing date

· Students who cannot find transportation for the late arrival time should report to the school cafeteria at regular time for a study hall. The use of phones and laptops will not be allowed in the cafeteria as they will interfere with WiFi access points needed for testing.

Preparation for the online exams

· Students can practice using the online platform at www.texasassessment.gov > students and families > practice test login > sign in as a guest user > grade level is EOC > choose a test to practice

9th GRADE CAMPUS MAY EOC TESTING INFORMATION

ALGEBRA 1 & BIOLOGY EXAM END-OF-COURSE: All freshmen will report to the Ninth Grade Campus by 7:20 am on Tuesday, May 3, and Wednesday, May 4. Because all the freshmen will be reporting to the Ninth Grade Campus first thing in the morning on May 3 and 4, car riders should plan to arrive earlier than normal due to the increase in the volume of parents dropping off students. As always, we provide an additional drop-off location in our back parking lot off of Ashlane Way after the buses depart around 7 AM.

  • On May 3, Algebra 1 students will take the STAAR End-of-Course Algebra 1 exam. Geometry and Algebra 2 students will take a benchmark and receive an EOC Biology review. Shuttles will run 8th block and after school on this day.
  • On May 4, all 9th-grade students will be taking the STAAR Biology End-of-Course exam. Shuttles will run 3rd block, 4th block, and after school.

As a reminder, all STAAR EOC exams at the high school level are required for graduation. Last summer the Texas legislature passed HB4545. HB 4545 established new requirements for accelerated instruction including 30 hours of tutoring for students who do not pass (this includes those that do not take) the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR). If you have questions about EOCs, graduation, or HB4545 requirements please contact your student’s counselor.

ATHLETICS:

BOYS BASKETBALL: Boys basketball will have open gyms from 4:30-6pm at the 9th grade campus Monday April 25th and Monday May 2nd. Any TWHS or McC students are welcome to come. Summer camp information can be found on our website at www.highlanderbasketball.org

POWERLIFTING: The Highlander Powerlifting Team completed its 2022 season on March 26 at the State Championships in Abilene. As a team, the Highlanders tied for 5th in the state with Daniel Gil placing 2nd in the 148 lb class and Aiden Peterson placing 3rd in the 165 lb class. Others that qualified for state were Alex Martin (9th in 220 lb class), Andrew Larkworthy (10th in 198 lb class), Hank Hewgley, Mauricio Kerguelen, Nick Beagle, and Cayden Clayton. The 8 state qualifiers were a new school record and the 2nd most at the state meet this year.

Before Spring Break, The Woodlands won its second consecutive regional championship. Hank Hewgley (132 lb), Daniel Gil (148 lb) and Aiden Peterson (165 lb) won regional titles in their respective weight classes. Others that earned medals were Andrew Larkworthy (3rd in 198 lb class), Cayden Clayton (4th in 220 lb class) and Alex Martin (5th in 220 lb class). Daniel Gil brought home the awards for best lightweight platform lifter in Squat, Bench, and Total Weight. Andrew Larkworthy was awarded the top Bench Press on the heavy platform. Other that qualified and competed at the Regional Meet were Nate Provost, Damon Arnold, Jerry Contreras, Mauricio Kerguelen, Nick Beagle, and Jakob Handy.

However, if a student fails second semester, the two semester averages cannot be averaged together for credit recovery. All students have to pass the second semester in order to get second semester credit. As always, please contact your student’s counselor with any questions.

Feel free to call the attendance office with any questions or concerns you may have. We're here to help.

CLINIC NOTES:

If your student has received any vaccines this school year, including their COVID-19 vaccines or booster, feel free to send a copy or screenshot to the clinic at school so that we can have the record on file. You can also email it to aransley@conroeisd.net for the Senior Campus, or jffletcher@conroeisd.net for the Ninth Grade Campus.

If you have a graduating senior, please be sure to request a copy of their vaccine record to be picked up by your student or emailed to you before the end of the school year. We will not be able to fulfill requests made during the summer, and we do not submit vaccine records to schools. Most colleges and universities require an additional dose of the Meningitis (MCV4) vaccine that is received on or after the 16th birthday, and you may want to also discuss the Meningitis B vaccine with your child's doctor. That is a newer vaccine that is available to children ages 16-18, and it protects against an additional strain of the meningococcal bacteria.

As you begin to schedule summer doctor's appointments, please be sure to have your child's doctor renew their school orders for the 2022-2023 school year. We do require new orders each year for chronic conditions that could possibly require treatment or medication at school, such as asthma, severe allergies, seizures, and diabetes. Please visit the Health Services website, https://www.conroeisd.net/department/health-services/ for blank copies of those forms.
