The Bee's Knees Newsletter
October 2018
Unbelievably the first quarter is nearly over. That means parent conferences are right around the corner. You will have the opportunity to discuss your child's progress with their teacher on Wednesday, October 24 from 4:30 to 8:00 and on Thursday, October 25 from 10:00 to 8:00. Our teachers have been working hard to teach our students and assessing their performance to make sure they are learning. We use two primary means of assessing your child's progress. We use the Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP), a comprehensive assessment that measures their development. Our teachers will record your child's DRDP scores on the BEC report card and discuss the results with you during the parent conference. In addition, we use a portfolio to collect and showcase your child's work. Our teachers will also share your child's portfolio with you at the conference.
Our "grading" procedures are different than any other school in the WSD. All other WSD schools report grades on a quarterly basis. We collect and report DRDP data at the end of the first and third quarters. We will report to you the growth we measured for your student at the conclusion of the third quarter. We collect portfolio data year round and will give you your child's portfolio at the end of the school year. In addition, parents of students that have IEPs will receive quarterly progress reports for each of their child's goals. Clearly we have lots of ways to measure how are students are doing. That is only half the battle. We have to make sure we effectively communicate those results to you so that you know how your student is doing and what to work on at home! If you have any questions about parent conferences or how we measure performance please contact me.

Staff Spotlight
Meet JoAnn Allers!
I have worked for the Wentzville School District for 16 years, 3 years at Heritage Intermediate as a Division Secretary and 13 years at the Early Childhood Center as a Division Secretary.
I have a B.S. in Home Economics from Truman State University where I studied Early Childhood and always wanted to work with children and love this age group. We have the best staff of anywhere that I have worked.
I retired early from American Airlines as a customer service agent for 26 years and love to travel.
I have been married to my husband Clark for 38 years. He is also retired from American Airlines and drives bus 134 for us. I have one step-son, Dennis and daughter-in-law, Kendra who live in Des Moines, Iowa. We have 4 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Over the years we have always had horses of all varieties from quarter horses and Tennesee walkers to Begian and Clydesdale draft horses. We have also had many dogs, and cats, mostly rescue, over the years and raise chickens for their eggs. I love to garden, can vegetables, swim, and help with bailing hay in the summertime.
My favorite hobby is playing golf. I play in two different ladies leagues in the summers when I am off. I am very active in my church where I sing in the choir and play in the bell choir.
From the Nurses
- Get your flu vaccine. The flu vaccine is the most important thing you can do to protect yourself and your family from the flu. Remember, it can take up to 2 weeks for the flu vaccine to take effect.
- Wash your hands! Don't touch yours eye, nose, or mouth without washing your hands first.
- Eat healthy meals and get plenty of sleep. These healthy habits will keep your immune system in fighting shape!
- Avoid close contact with people that are sick. Clean and disinfect surfaces that people often come into contact with.
- Stay home if you're sick! If you have flu-like symptoms, stay home until you are fever free for 24 hours.
Dental Screeenings
The consent forms were sent home the last week of September in your child's backpack. If you still need a consent form the nurses can email you one or feel free to stop by the nurse's office.

The students that had the highest donation amounts were: AM-Maddox Gunter & Barrett Moss, PM-Izzy Williamson & Jace Hobson. We are sending a special thanks to these students and everyone that generously supported this fundraiser....THANK YOU!!!!!! BEC staff also wish to thank Kristie Williamson and Aimee Rhodes, BEC PTO President and Vice president for all the hard work they did to make this Bumbles-A-Thon the most successful yet!!
