U of M apple variety information
The University of Minnesota is recognized as one of the top apple breeding and genetics research programs in the country. The apple breeding program began in the late 1800s with the goal of developing cold hardy apples that are both high quality and high yielding.
Since the apple breeding program began at the University of Minnesota in 1878, 29 apple varieties have been released. Some University-developed varieties are no longer available, so we have listed all the current U of M varieties, many of which you can purchase from local nurseries and orchards.
Call the Extension Office if you would like a printed copy sent to you.
Happy apple shopping!

Cone and seed collection-Help harvest seeds for a greener tomorrow!
Do you know of a woodland or forest that produces large amounts of seeds or cones?
Why collect?
- The seeds and cones you collect play a crucial role in the reforestation of state forests, parks, schools, and private lands across the state.
- We need your help collecting local seeds to grow trees adapted to our climate and produce more resilient forests.
- The Nursery greatly depends on the public to maintain our seed supply.
- Engaging in this activity can also be a wonderful family activity that offers a chance to earn some extra income. Prices for seeds range from $20 to $150 per bushel, depending on the specific tree species.
Before collecting seeds or cones, contact one of the DNR seed drop-off locations to check which seeds are needed and how to collect and process them.
Check regulations before collecting. You may need a permit to harvest from public land (Contact your local DNR office). Minnesota state forests do not require a permit if you are collecting seeds and cones to sell to the Nursery. If collecting on private land, get permission from the landowner.

Preparing hives for winter
One of the best ways to become a successful beekeeper is through hands-on mentoring from experienced beekeepers. Join instructors from the Bee Squad in our teaching apiary for in-person workshops that will take you from spring to fall. Each class will focus on a specific seasonal management skill, with time for participants to try inspection techniques and ask questions about their own colonies.
Give your hives their best chance of winter survival with an oxalic acid treatment and proper winter wrapping. We will also discuss options for winter feeding and what to expect from your bees as the hive prepares for winter. This course welcomes beekeepers of all skill levels, including first-year beekeepers and those who have taken the Beekeeping in Northern Climates course and want to try hive management before purchasing their own bees.
