Update from the Superintendent
April 11, 2020
Dear East China Families,
I hope this message finds you and your families safe and healthy.
The East China School District submitted the required Continuity of Learning and COVID-19 Response Plan to RESA yesterday. Writing this plan was a requirement of the Governor's Executive Order 2020-35 which closed schools for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. The Learning Plan outlines how we will move forward for the remainder of the school year.
I am pleased that our plan was approved Friday afternoon allowing us to move forward with our implementation. Teachers will be busy next week preparing lessons and setting up their virtual classrooms. Then, beginning the week of April 20, the teachers will be communicating these instruction plans by email to their students.
Elementary Students Weekly Schedule
Kindergarten through 5th grade students will receive a Bridge Activities book that will be referenced in the lessons along with additional supplemental activities. As soon as the Bridge Activities books arrive, they will be mailed to students.
Monday - Students will receive an email from their classroom teacher with a lesson for the week. Students will also receive a lesson from their gym teacher.
Tuesday- Students will receive an email from their art teacher with a lesson.
Wednesday-Students will receive an email from their music teacher with a lesson.
Thursday-Students will receive an email from their Spanish or technology teacher with a lesson.
Friday-Students will receive an email from their media teacher with a lesson.
Secondary Students Weekly Schedule
Students in Grades 6-8 will receive a Bridge Activities book that will be referenced in the lessons along with supplemental activities. As soon as the Bridge Activities books arrive, they will be mailed to students.
High school students will receive instruction in a variety of methods including lessons from Khan Academy.
Monday-Students will receive an email from their mathematics teacher with a lesson.
Tuesday-Students will receive an email from their English teacher with a lesson.
Wednesday-Students will receive an email from their science teacher with a lesson.
Thursday-Students will receive an email from their social studies teacher with a lesson.
Friday-Students will receive an email from their elective teacher(s) with a lesson.
Below are a few clarifications on common questions as we shift to our new Learning Plan:
This course work will be valuable and will play an important role in developing the skills necessary to transition to the next school year. That being stated, students' grades will not be negatively impacted as the result of this coursework.
Information will soon be posted on the ECSD Website (www.eastchinaschools.org) for those students who need support with technology.
Teachers will have established office hours to offer support and feedback to our students.
We encourage high school students taking AP courses to be actively preparing for the upcoming AP exams. AP teachers have been asked to communicate changes to the test and testing procedures in addition to the availability of resources through the College Board. Contact your AP teacher with questions.
Students enrolled in MVHS, Edgenuity (E2020), and Dual Enrollment classes are expected to complete courses as previously scheduled. For assistance contact your instructor/counselor.
All 12th Graders’ transcripts are being audited to verify the completion of the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) which is the academic requirement for the Class of 2020. The Counselors are reviewing academic transcripts and will be in contact with any 12th grade students needing additional credits to earn a 2020 diploma.
Decisions regarding end of year ceremonies, including graduation, will be made when we are able and have additional guidelines.
Students cannot access the building to gather items from their lockers/desks at this time. The only exception is for students who have a band instrument or needed equipment in the school to complete assigned lessons. Arrangements will be made by the building principal for students/parents to access these specific items. Additional information regarding the ability to retrieve non-essential items will be provided once the shelter in place order is amended.
Other items:

We are proud that our Learning Plan allows us to continue to connect with our students and families, provide learning opportunities for our students, and support each other all while preparing for the 2020-2021 school year. Keeping in mind that this is a time in which everyone is learning new technology platforms while navigating a global crisis, we must be patient with our students, families and each other.
Thank you for your patience and support as we continue to navigate unprecedented times, significant change and uncertainty in a few short weeks. I am proud of the ways in which our students, our staff and our families have already come together to support one another.
Sincerely,
Suzanne Cybulla
