It has been a fiddly February with the weather: with lots of rain, wind, some snow, high and low temps. Through it all, our GREAT EMPIRE thrived with student achievement as our students continue to represent the community by doing AWESOME things in and out of school. This past month, students have closed the book on MP2 and they have begun the process of selecting course work for next year. Also, throughout the month we were able to celebrate African American History month on several different levels from our daily readings conducted by African American culture club, to door decorating contests, guest speakers, and various other events that took place throughout the month. Our PTSO had another OUTSTANDING showing for our annual TRICKY TRAY…thank you to the executive team and all the volunteers for the hard work and dedication to the students of PHS. PHS Environmental Science Class
Piscataway High School, Dr. Tenenbaum's environmental science classes had a special visit on February 15th from Von Scully. Mr. Scully is the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassador for the Lower Raritan watershed region. Students learned how to assess the health of a stream by surveying macroinvertabrates such as worms, snails, beetles, and dragonflies. Mr. Scully also shared data and stories from his stream research and invited PHS students to participate in NJDEP stream research as citizen scientists.
Rutgers and PHS
On February 13, 2019, Science department hosted students from Rutgers School of Pharmacy. Five students, currently enrolled in their pharmacy program made an interactive presentation. As a part of the Rutgers High School Outreach Program and members of Student National Pharmacist Association (SNPhA) , they introduced and answered questions related to careers in pharmacy and related information regarding the pharmacy program at Rutgers. Students were also made aware of a joint program with Montclair State University that allows them to earn a dual degree. Thirty PHS students attended the session that was held after school.
National School Counseling Week
PHS Visit Barcelona, Spain
PHS students visiting Barcelona, Spain. PHS has had an exchange with La Sagrada Familia School since 1990. Students are immersed in to the language and culture. Our students attend school, participate in numerous classes and visit famous tourist sites. These international exchanges allow our students to recognize that we are one global community. It is a rewarding experience for all involved. We look forward to the Barcelona students visiting PHS in mid-March. Thank you Ms. Herrera for all you do to coordinate this exchange.

March is Youth Art Month! Dorothy Amme and Lisa Lentini-Pombrio’s AP Art Classes were inspired by street artist Kelsey Montague and created a set of life-size wings for each of our district buildings! Throughout the month, we are encouraging our community to use art as a way to think about “What Lifts You?” or what inspires you. Empty Cups Fundraiser | PHS Ceramics Classes | Mary Wartenburg
PHS Ceramics students raised $1,200 for Feeding Middlesex County at their Empty Cups Fundraiser! Mugs made by PHS Ceramics students were available for purchase along with hot beverages, snacks, and other artwork. Students provided face painting for the kids and there were board games for families to enjoy! Coffee was donated by Starbucks. It was an awesome afternoon! Thanks to Mary Wartenburg for her vision, enthusiasm, and collaboration with Feeding Middlesex County and Starbucks! Art makes a difference!

PHS Teacher and 50 Strong Program Coordinator Attends the Inaugural MBK Rising Conference Hosted by the Obama Foundation
Mr. L-Mani S. Viney, a teacher of Social Studies and Program Coordinator of the 50 Strong Peer to Peer mentoring program at Piscataway High School was appointed to the My Brother’s Keeper national steering committee by the Obama Foundation during their inaugural MBK Rising! Conference in Oakland, California. The My Brother’s Keeper initiative was first created by President Obama in 2014 to address the educational, social and emotional challenges faced by boys and men of color.
The national steering committee was comprised of some of the nation’s top thought and organizational leaders working with boys and men of color, including organizations such as the Campaign for Black Male Achievement, Color of Change, National CARES Mentoring and MENTOR to name a few. Their role was to provide advisement on the structure and programming of this major conference for the Foundation.The event was an invitation only conference attended by 1,000 leaders and young people from across the country. Along with being placed on the steering committee, Mr. Viney spoke on two panels which focused on creating and sustaining asset-based frameworks and narratives on how organizations and educational systems should work with and view boys and men of color.
Though the conference has ended, Mr. Viney will continue to serve in an advisement role to the Executive Director of the My Brother’s Keeper program within the Obama Foundation on matters concerning education and boys and men of color.

This was our 5th Annual Tricky Tray and with all our donations, corporate sponsors, and student volunteers it was a huge success.
